In recent years, Katrin has developed into a training mountain for ski tourers (ski runners). However, if you choose the route via the Windengraben, you are mostly alone for a little more than half of the ascent. Since the hut keeper of the alpine hut drives up the mountain daily with a piste machine, you practically have a piste available for the descent. Since December 2014, the guest operation at the cable car's mountain station is also open on weekends during the cable car operating times.

    Author’s recommendation

Even if the final slope by the parking lot is almost bare in late winter, a continuous snow cover usually begins soon above it.

    Safety information

The ascent via the Windengraben is very avalanche safe. Still, the standard equipment should be used!

    Roadbook

From the parking lot, follow the ski slope for about 45 minutes until a forest road crosses it at an elevation of 895m after a longer straight section. Follow this to the left, at another junction again to the left. Pass under the cable car. At a left turn, leave the road straight ahead. On the further ascent, the road is crossed several times first heading southeast, then south up to an elevation of 1180m. Now turn west and mostly follow the ridge to a trail junction of the summer trail visible in winter at an elevation of 1362m. Keeping left, continue on the summer trail with a slight ascent south of Feuerkogel to Katrinalm (beware of avalanche danger!). It is also possible to reach Katrinalm from the junction via the summit. The detour is only a few minutes.

From the alpine hut, you descend into the valley on the former ski slope.

    Public transport

Bus and train connections lead to Bad Ischl. The valley station of the Katrin cable car is accessible by public transport Monday to Friday (city line from Bad Ischl train station). From the center of Bad Ischl, it is about a 30-minute walk to the Katrin Cable Car (follow the signs "Nussenseerunde-Ruine Wildenstein 11"). The Katrin Cable Car operates daily from May to the end of October. However, since 2014 there is a gentle winter operation. The cable car runs from Friday to Sunday and on holidays. No skiers are transported - only hikers and snowshoers!

    Directions

From the A1, either take the Regau or Thalgau exit into the center of Bad Ischl and follow the purple signs "Katrin Cable Car" to the valley station.

    Parking

Paid parking lot at the cable car (4€ daily fee).
