A popular glacier descent that is easy to reach. The tour should only be undertaken in good visibility,

as the route leads past glacier breaks.

The descent is not difficult, but it is a 2700 metre descent which, depending on the snow conditions, should not be underestimated.

    Roadbook

Take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to the summit station at 3842 m, allow for waiting times.

From the summit station through an ice tunnel, then descend approx. 90 metres on foot. There are always traffic jams on the descent, sometimes you have to descend with crampons, depending on the conditions you have to allow 30 minutes before you can put on your skis. The descent begins in a southerly direction to the Col du Midi 3532 m, past the Refuge des Cosmiques, then south-east past the Pyramide du Tacul. Continue on the slopes of the Glacier Du Geant to the Séracs du Geant, which you skirt on the west side. At around 2600 metres, you can cross to the Refuge du Requin, which is usually open. The descent continues onto the Mer de Glace, where conditions are often similar to those on the piste. If there is enough snow, you can ski down to approx. 1600 m, then a climb begins on the left (approx. 15 min.) to Les Mottets to a small hut with a drinks bar. From here a wide forest road leads down to Chamonix with a descent of approx. 600 metres.

If the descent to Chamonix is no longer possible, climb up to the Montevers cog railway at approx. 1800 m and take the railway back to Chamonix.
