The mighty Grabspitze in the Pfunderer mountains
The ascent through the forest is the first criterion. The following slopes not only require extremely safe conditions, but also a lot of experience, a safe hairpin technique in very steep terrain and a good level of fitness. Crampons are sometimes advisable for the extremely steep summit slope.
Due to the consistently steep and long ascent, the Grabspitze does not receive many visitors either in summer or winter and is therefore considered an insider tip. The name of the summit is derived from the deep trenches that lead in a direct line and a final extremely steep flank of over 40 degrees to the summit. The view of the surrounding mountains, especially the Hochfeiler massif, is magnificent.
Author’s recommendation
The ski tour to the Grabspitze is mainly undertaken in spring after clear nights. An ascent is also possible in safe conditions in high winter. Due to the north-facing aspect, powder conditions can still be found even in spring. However, the cirques are also often influenced by the wind, which means that the conditions can vary between powder and wind-packed snow, especially in high winter.

Albergo PfitscherhofSafety information
The descent over the steep flank as well as through the steep cirques requires absolutely safe conditions and very good skiing skills. An early start on the Grabspitze is essential, especially in spring, as the sun softens the steep, east-facing snow flank early on and therefore the risk of avalanches should not be underestimated.

Roadbook
We start from the road by the farms and follow the course of the stream in a southerly direction until we reach a large wooden bridge, which we cross. We then cross the meadow to the forest, where we always follow the signposted summer path(please note: at the edge of the forest, do not follow the tractor track to the left into the ditch - dead end!) The forest soon steepens up in front of us and the ascent along the summer path is also steep and strenuous throughout. From around 1750 metres above sea level, the terrain becomes somewhat gentler at a small ruined stone hut. From here you can already see the first steep cirque, which we cross on the ascent, heading for the strikingly narrow and consistently steep trench. Before doing so, we cross the deep-cut stream and climb steeply through this incision on the orographic right-hand side. After a few hairpin bends, we reach the second wide, sweeping cirque. We quickly gain height in numerous hairpin bends, cross a somewhat narrower cut and now reach the third cirque. Steepening, we initially head directly southwards up to approx. 2800 metres. We now cross in a south-easterly direction out onto the extremely steep snow and summit flank, which is over 40 degrees at its steepest point. In the south-easternmost part, the flank is not quite as steep, making it possible to climb through on skis in good conditions. In spring in particular, however, the flank is usually as hard as a pickaxe and it is therefore advisable to take crampons as well as light crampons. The last few metres to the summit lead to a notch and over this, without difficulty, to the highest point of the Grabspitze in just a few minutes.
