Safety information
After heavy snowfall, there is an avalanche danger both when ascending and descending from the Tagweidegg.
Regarding the ban on piste touring during the winter season, the following is stated literally at https://www.zauchensee.at/de/winter/sicherheit-pistenregeln.html:
“Ski Touring
For your own safety, piste touring in Zauchensee-Flachauwinkl is strictly prohibited without exception from the start to the end of the winter season, especially in the evening and nighttime hours. Compliance is controlled based on applicable law. Please use only the marked ascent routes in the respective ski area for touring – for example, the designated ascent routes to the Kemahdhöhe in Radstadt-Altenmarkt.”
Roadbook
From the car park via the World Cup downhill piste (Kälberloch descent) southwest into a shallow basin, whose right northern part is called the Seekarkessel. Depending on snow conditions, one roughly follows the summer path, which leads through the steep southern flank of the Arche into the saddle between Arche and Tagweidegg. From there, via short steep ascents onto the north ridge of the Tagweidegg and easily to the highest point.
DESCENT:
The descent follows the ascent path, whereby it is better to go directly down from the saddle between Arche and Tagweidegg into the Seekarkessel and reach the piste with a short counter slope from the basin.
More rewarding in safe conditions is the short but steep east flank of the Tagweidegg. This has about 35 to 38 degrees of incline in the entry area. You do not descend fully into the Seekarkessel but stay on a kind of ramp on the southern edge until you reach the access to the retention basin and can slide flat over it onto the piste. Return via the piste to Zauchensee.
If the direct descent seems too risky, an alternative is to descend a short distance over the southeast ridge (caution on cornices!) and then enter the less steep east slope on the left at a suitable spot. Continue flat above the Seekarkessel and over short slopes to the piste.
Public transport
Zauchensee is accessible during the winter season (= piste operation) by ski bus from Altenmarkt. This means for (piste) ski tourers that no public transport to Zauchensee is available outside the season.
