First you have to climb the dam wall of the Finstertal reservoir, then continue along the reservoir to its southern end. Through a hollow and over the first steep step we reach a high valley. A steep final slope to a notch in the summit ridge leads to the ski depot. From here it is an easy walk to the summit.

    Safety information

    (1) Crossing the very steep slopes along the reservoir and especially the very steep slope to the ski depot on the saddle to the south ridge of the Sulzkogel require safe conditions and avalanche expertise.

    (2) Do not walk on the ice surface of the reservoir! The lowering of the water level can create dangerous cavities.

    (3) Beware of cornices in the summit area! Always stay in the immediate vicinity of the rocks.

    Tips and suggestions

Graf-Ferdinand-Haus (2145 m), open from the beginning of December to the end of April.

    Roadbook

For the first stage - from the car park of the 3-Seen-Lift to the dam wall of the Finstertal reservoir - there are two ascent options to choose from: take a very leisurely route along the perfectly groomed toboggan run to the Graf-Ferdinand-Haus and from here follow the service road in a south-easterly direction to the left (eastern) upper end of the dam. Alternatively, you can take the more direct route by leaving the toboggan run at the second right-hand bend and ascending in open terrain towards the dam wall (see track descent).

From the dam, roughly follow the course of the summer trail along the eastern shore of the reservoir to the southern end of the lake in approx. 30 minutes (altitude loss approx. 40 metres). Continue along the small valley that rises from here, where the route to the Finstertaler Scharte fork branches off to the left. Stay to the right and follow the somewhat steeper valley (a rain gauge is visible at the top right) to the first rock or steep step (approx. 30°, a short section steeper) at approx. 2500 m, which is best bypassed on the right. Then again in moderately steep terrain up to the level of the flat cirque floor of the Gamezkogelferner.

Now continue in a north-easterly direction through the high valley, which leads directly below the approx. 35° steep slope, via which the saddle in the summit ridge is reached. This steep slope requires hairpin bends and is best tackled at the lowest point of the slightly pronounced hollow. After approx. 100 metres you reach the saddle to the left below the summit. Depending on the conditions, the ski depot can be set up right here or you can climb a short distance up the ridge with your skins and then set up the depot at the first rocks.

The last 60 metres over the broad south ridge are tackled on foot. The markings of the summer trail are mostly visible here and the difficulties are minimal. Finally, head north-east to the summit cross.

The descent is best and relatively independent of the conditions in the area of the ascent track. Once you reach the reservoir, you will have to ski up again to get back along the lake to the dam crest of the dam wall about 50 metres higher up.
