A ski high tour with low difficulty but demanding fitness on a popular 4000 m peak of the Valais Alps (WS+).
The Strahlhorn is predestined for ski touring. The total 15 km long route leads almost exclusively over gentle glaciers and is thus ideal ski terrain. During the short winter season from March to May, getting a place at the Britannia Hut is not easy, as Strahlhorn is one of the few 4000 m peaks where you can almost ski to the summit. Only the steep section with up to 40° before Adler Pass presents a short challenge: if this wall is icy, ascent and descent are done on foot over the ridge. Mastering short turns in steep terrain is therefore essential; this route is not recommended for absolute beginners. From the summit there is a view of all famous 4000 m peaks of the Western Alps: Monte Rosa, Matterhorn and Mischabel group nearby, in the distance the peaks of the Bernese Alps and Gran Paradiso shine. The descent is a real pleasure; in less than an hour you glide to the well-deserved snack at the Britannia Hut — one does not want to imagine having to walk this route back.
