Super firn tour with plenty of vertical metres and an alpine-style climbing finale. If you are looking for an adventurous route off the beaten track in the Kalkkögel, the Steingrubenkogel is the right place for you. Extremely rewarding!

The Steingruben via ferrata, which was completely renovated in summer 2011, makes it possible to reach the fourth highest Kalkkögel summit in winter. The ascent route presented here can easily be divided into three sections: the first third runs entirely through the Schlick 2000 ski area, the second section through moderately steep ski terrain to the ski depot, and finally a via ferrata. If you don't want to do the last section, i.e. the 100 metre climb to the summit cross, you will definitely be rewarded with a magnificent firn tour with an impressive rocky backdrop, the likes of which can otherwise only be found in the Dolomites.
Author’s recommendation
An early start is worthwhile so that the relatively long ascent, the Steingruben via ferrata and, as the icing on the cake, fantastic firn, can be completed without rushing. Immediately after the winter season, when the valley descent is no longer available, you may have to take the gravel road to the Schlicker Alm or to the Froneben middle station. as an exception may be used.

Crampons and/or a small ice axe are helpful for the summit flank, as the wire rope safety devices are usually snowed in there.Tips and suggestions

Roadbook
We start at the valley station of the Schlick 2000. The first 600 metres along the valley descent directly to the Schlicker Alm (1,643 m). Behind the small chapel, the marked summer trail crosses to the Alpenclubscharte. We follow this up to a large basin, the Rossgrube. Through this, first flat, then increasingly steeper, directly towards the gully to the left of the Steingrubenkogel. In the uppermost part, this becomes narrower and narrower, but also much flatter until it splits at the very top - keep right here! A few metres below the saddle, usually a little overweighted, we make a ski depot. From here, follow the wire rope of the Steingruben via ferrata over ledges and short steep steps to the summit flank. This is usually completely covered in snow - be careful on hard snow and/or ice! At the end, a rock needle is bypassed on the south side. The last few metres to the summit cross are once again quite steep. Rope insurance would be on the far left, but this is also mostly under the snow. Descent as ascent.
