Sittersbach valley from Hintersee
Selected alternatives for you
The Sittersbachtal valley on the Hochkalterstock in Berchtesgaden is the loneliest of the three Kaltertal valleys, and not without reason. An extremely arduous approach through a belt of forest and the need to find the right route make this undertaking an adventure. On the other hand, the fit ski tourer is presented with an impressive high valley and three possible tour destinations of increasing physical and technical difficulty: the Sittersbachscharte with Hinterbergkopf, the Hochfeldscharte and the Steintalhörnl. Aspirants to the Kaltertäler should first try the Ofental.

Initially a leisurely stroll along a forest road, the ski tour turns into a hunting trail that leads through difficult forest terrain. The trail follows aisles and sparse forest, but you still need a bit of flair to find the right path. In the high valley itself, the ascent takes place to the right of the Sittersbach and offers a great view of the Reiter Alm. Depending on the avalanche situation and your own physical fitness, you can decide how to continue. The best (firn) conditions are required for the Steintalhörnl. From a skiing point of view, the Hochfeldscharte is probably the most enjoyable. If you skip the Steintalhörnl and still want to climb a summit, choose the Sittersbachscharte with ski depot and easy onward route to the Hinterbergkopf.

From the car park, head southwest to the Lahnwald service hut. There we turn left, cross the Klausbach stream and after approx. 150 metres, directly before the Ofental signpost, we turn right onto a forest road. This crosses under the Ofen and Steintal valleys to the Sittersbach stream, which we cross. After about 150 metres, a forest road branches off to the left, which we follow straight ahead to Vorderberghörnl.
At around 1080 m, the path ends at a clearing and turns into a hunting trail. We keep to the right and climb uphill through a ravine. A large blocking rock face forces us through sparse forest on a ramp to the left. At around 1380 metres, the forest thins out and offers the first glimpses of the high valley.
From here, we keep to the right of the Sittersbach stream, and the tour then leads straight upwards through a clearing in a section of forest. Keeping to the right, we climb higher over hilly terrain and gradually the route becomes easier to see.
The final destination of the tour is decided at 1860 metres. Only in the best conditions do we head left through a very steep rocky narrow section up to the Steintalhörnl (ski depot just below the summit, crampons may be necessary). For the Hochfeldscharte, keep to the right and continue up a striking ramp without difficulty. We continue straight on to the Sittersbachscharte. There we make our ski depot and continue in a southerly direction over a striking ridge to the Hinterbergkopf.
The descent follows the ascent route, there are various options.
