Dream firn on the Schwarzenstein in spring.
Easter Monday: 3:30 am – the alarm clock rings… well, the early bird catches the worm! So out of bed, skis in the car and off we go… picking up a few like-minded early risers on the way and into the beautiful Ahrntal. The avalanche report shows warning level 1 for the whole region, so the snow conditions are relatively safe. We are at the starting point. St. Johann in Ahrntal, drive up to the Buschenschank Stallila (1472m). It is still dark upon arrival, we strap the skis to the backpack and set off. Up through the Rotbachtal we roughly follow the summer path. It slowly gets light, here and there some patches of snow appear, but we have to carry the skis past the Daimerhütte up to a snowfield about 100m above the hut, altogether just over an hour. After overcoming the snowfield, the path becomes flat and on the right at height appears the Schwarzensteinhütte (2923m).
