From Mandlwandstraße, first flat towards Mandlwand, then it gradually becomes steeper from about the level of Windraucheggalm and via the Brandholzriedel the huge rock block “Schoberofen” is reached.
The route to Brandholz or Schoberofen offers beautiful south-facing slopes that become steeper upwards and can be climbed up to the base of the Sattelköpfe. However, the end point of the route is usually at the striking and widely visible rock block “Schoberofen”. Until there, the ascent is largely avalanche-safe. At the foot of the rock block, you can rest well and enjoy the extensive view or admire the steep rock walls above. Equally rewarding in firn or on cold midwinter days with powder snow.
Author’s recommendation
A sufficiently deep snow cover in the upper part is pleasant due to the many rock blocks and partly tall dwarf pines.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

Avalanche danger exists on both sides of Brandholzriedel and from Schoberofen also from the slopes above.

The photos for the route were taken on different days and under varying snow conditions.
Roadbook
From the Saukarlift parking lot along the L 246, a walk of just under 400 m (or one stop with the ski bus) to the Sporta hut. The ski trail from the Grißfeldlift merges directly at the bus stop. Here you can put on your skis. Pass between the holiday homes and at the first good opportunity, cross a small ditch lined with a row of trees to the left. On the other side, you stand at the beginning of the gentle slopes leading up towards Brandholzriedel / Schoberofen. Ascend freely, crossing the hiking trail to Windraucheggalm or Wiederacheggalm and continue, keeping more to the right on the gradually steepening slope. If the rock blocks and dwarf pines are still insufficiently snow-covered, you cross at an altitude of about 1800 m diagonally right onto the boundary ridge (= Brandholzriedel) of the Schmaltal and climb it in several hairpin bends up to the Schoberofen. A short left traverse leads to its base. With stable snow conditions, you can climb about 150 vertical meters further up to the base of the Sattelköpfe cliffs.
The descent follows the ascent route.
