Schober - West gully
What to do if on the day of the opening of the Malta High Alpine Road the barriers remain closed? After hours of waiting, you look for an alternative objective!
But the ski run presented here is much more than just a filler...
The Schober is an imposing mountain shape and a dream ski mountain - a demanding summit goal, no matter from which side you come, it always shows its teeth.
Once you have overcome the long forest road, the next steep section with the small waterfall must be cleverly negotiated. If this is achieved - on the right side, in terms of ascent - you have gained your ticket to great happiness. Now the way is clear and you can dedicate yourself with devotion to the exciting west-south-west gully.
A real treat for every connoisseur who loves solitary and demanding ascents!
Without navigation difficulties, you ascend through the relatively wide gully, after the small high plateau keep rather left (west) and cleverly bypass the rock-strewn steep section. Alternatively, you can also ascend far right (east) through a steep gully.
Finally follows the magnificent finale in the southwest flank!
The summit slope steepens again considerably, but with clever route choice you always easily remain below the 40° mark. The last few meters with skis on the shoulder and in icy conditions with crampons to the beautifully shaped, solitary summit!
This charming and short ascent in perfect ski terrain will remain a very positive memory for you for a long time!
According to the internationally used five-part difficulty scale by TOPONEIGE (I=easy / II=moderately difficult / III=difficult / IV=very difficult / V=extremely difficult), the ski technical and alpine demands of this route are rated as III.

Tips and suggestions
Warning: On this long route there are no refreshment options along the way, so bring enough drinks and provisions!Roadbook
Start immediately right after the Schönaubridge at the barrier. Follow the long forest road for just under 5 km, then - at the height of the valley hut - leave it to the right. Immediately here a creek crossing, follow the path briefly further. Now to the left, the lower section of the gully and the waterfall are now very well visible.
Now, without navigational difficulties, follow the stream bed or the gully until you reach a blocking rock formation at 2550m. There, slightly keeping left, cleverly ascend through a narrow gully (alternatively you can also slip far right through a wider gully) into steeper terrain.
Use the terrain optimally with skillful route choice and many switchbacks, always slightly veering right (east). The last 100 vertical meters are mostly to be managed with skis carried on the shoulder, depending on current conditions sometimes crampons are also needed here.
Descent from the summit directly in the summit fall line, the steep section is best skied on the far left through a fairly wide gully. Now many other descent variants are possible.
Directions
Via the Tauern motorway A10, exit Gmünd and continue to Malta. Through the village and onwards to the toll station of the Malta High Alpine Road, which is not staffed in winter. Still almost 4 km of hairpin bends to the Schönaubridge (often heavily icy, snow chains are strongly recommended).Coordinates
