Selected alternatives for you
The ski tour to the Schadler via Sesvenna notch is easy and is often done as a simple alternative to the ascent of Piz Sesvenna. A descent into the east cirque or crossing the ridge over Piz Rims to Piz Cristanas with descent through the Val Cristanas would be an option.

Ascent to the Sesvenna hut: Starting from the upper end of the village of Schlinig, we follow the mostly groomed winter hiking trail. After a wooded crest, it goes slightly downhill, crossing the cross-country ski trails twice. The hiking trail gently leads up to the managed Schliniger Alm. We now hike in the middle of the valley, passing the material cableway of the hut (Innere Alm) on the left until below the rocks of the Schwarzwand. After a right curve, we ascend the increasingly steep slope to the right of the rock wall in several hairpin bends to a rock outcrop. The steep gully between the rock outcrop and Schwarzwand is the key point and is secured with a fixed rope. In a left curve, we cross the steep gully easily rising along the securing, and quickly reach above Schwarzwand. Ascending a little steeper right to the poles, then it flattens again. We reach a pasture fence. Behind it, it goes fairly flat and easy in the broad valley up to the already visible Sesvenna hut.

    Author’s recommendation

A multi-day stay at the Sesvenna hut offers a considerable number of varied ski tours. This saves about 550 meters of elevation gain and nearly two hours of valley ascent.

    Roadbook

We hike westwards at the foot of the hut slope in a hollow to the steep cirque between the two prominent rock hills. After a few hairpin bends, we reach the saddle, where it is better to descend a few meters behind to avoid the steep north ridge. In a wide left curve, we cross around this ridge over gentle slopes southwards to a bottleneck between the Schadler forepeak on the right and the Föllakopf on the left. This steep gully is overcome in a short right curve. We are now in a wide basin, which is crossed westwards towards the already visible Sesvenna notch. Above the Furkelsee, we go a little steeper in a short left curve to the broad Fuorcla Sasvenna. We turn right and follow the very broad and moderately steep south ridge. Shortly before the summit, we head for the ridge rocks. On the somewhat narrower but fairly flat summit ridge, we reach the summit cairn of the Schadler.

    Descent along the ascent route.

A descent along the east ridge with a turn into the steeper south slopes also brings us back to the ascent track.

If you follow the ridge towards Piz Rims, you can first descend quite steeply right from the saddle into the east cirque towards the Schlinig Pass.
