The east to northeast facing slopes below the summit require secure conditions. The last exposed meters over snow bands and rocks to the summit require a lot of sure-footedness, freedom from dizziness, and alpine experience. However, a summit success is not necessary for the descent.Tips and suggestions
The approximately 4 km long access road to Vilsalpsee is closed to private cars during the day from 8 am to 5 pm. Depending on snow conditions, chains are helpful.Roadbook
We start from the paid parking lot at Vilsalpsee and follow the right lake shore in the direction of Vilsalpe. About 10 meters past a bridge, we turn right and walk past the Vilsalpe (1178 m) into a wooded area that becomes steeper and steeper. At the deepest notch of the terrain (Vordere Schafwanne), you now cross right into a flat, wide snowfield. Shortly afterwards, it continues through a deep couloir bordered on the right and left by cornices. In switchbacks, we laboriously work our way up meter by meter into the steep notch and further up to the ridge. There is the possibility of setting up the ski depot already at the signposts between Rauhorn and Gaishorn or to gain some height on the flat west flank. However, at about 2150 meters, you should take off your skis at the latest. From there, carefully step by step, meter by meter, you head towards the Rauhorn summit. The last meters must not be underestimated due to their exposure and distance.
From the ski depot at the ridge, it is best to choose the entry Rider's right through the right of the two couloirs. After exiting the couloir, keep to the foot of the rock wall to lose as little height as possible. In long turns, it goes over a hilly and moderately steep terrain towards the valley up to a forest level. Depending on snow conditions, passing through can be somewhat tricky. It is best to keep very far Rider's right and cross slowly through trees and bushes. Further on an open area towards the valley, but this time across Rider's left to the first steep couloir of the ascent. Over a small forest level, it goes into the couloir, after exiting which you orient strongly to the left again. Now it goes for the last time through forests and bushes over a small stream until you find yourself again on the flat area at the bridge. The last meters to the parking lot can be covered this time skating on the left lake shore.
