Pizol is not only a ski area but also the name of the highest peak between Weisstannen, Calfeisen, and the Rhine valley. At 2,844 m height, it is the highest peak entirely within the canton of St. Gallen. Thanks to the mountain lifts of the ski area, the summit is feasible as a half-day excursion. On the tour, you will not encounter ski operations; the ski route runs through a remote former glacier valley framed by the jagged Lavtina and Wildsee peaks. The highest of these peaks, the Pizol, can only be climbed in winter with crampons and ice axe, as the fixed cables of the summer path (T4) are usually buried under the snow in winter. The former Pizol glacier has now shrunk to a dead ice remnant, so there is no need to worry about crevasses. However, due to melting permafrost, there is a rockfall hazard from the north slope east of the Pizol saddle. Ski tourers should therefore keep as far west as possible to avoid the danger zone.
