The ascent along the ridge between Admonter Hütte and Mittagskogel can be quite difficult. Beware of cornices and icing. Crampons may be more useful here than skis. The descent into the Roßkar should be considered carefully. Especially at the beginning, there is a very steep rocky passage to negotiate and the terrain is quite steep. Due to the north-facing orientation of the cirque, the conditions can be correspondingly icy.

From the car park to the Pölzlalm and continue along the forest road to a prominent junction that leads over a bridge in a tight right-hand bend. In spring you often have to carry your skis up to this point. The path over the bridge leads into the Roßkar, so we follow the hiking trail to the Seeböden in a southerly direction, initially still moderately steep. After the Klapfboden, the terrain becomes more challenging. The steep forest section can be very unpleasant, especially after starry nights when the snow cover has cooled down considerably.
Once we reach the small Seeboden, the terrain becomes more appealing again and we continue in a south-westerly direction (be careful not to go too far west, otherwise you will end up in the Rauchmauerkar) along the summer trail. The impressive Seeboden now opens up in front of us and we manage a few metres of descent with our skins on our skis. From here, the ascent route to the Admonterhütte is clearly visible.
From the Admonterhütte we continue northwards to the Mittagskogel. In winter, the crossing resembles a ridge which is tackled on the left-hand side in the direction of ascent. Watch out for slips, as the trail descends steeply to the left and right. On frozen firn, crampons are probably better suited than skis. The fantastic flank of the Mittagskogel is steep but not difficult and after a short detour to the summit, the route continues flat to the Natterriegel.
Descent:
The descent can be made along the ascent track.
When descending into the Roßkar, we leave the summit of the Naterriegel in the direction of the Hexenturm and keep left. The passage is a steep transverse gully. It lies to the north and is not easy to find. Don't look too far to the right! From the Roßkar, the descent is easy to see and we descend in flatter, enjoyable skiing terrain. At the end of the cirque we turn right and descend to the Müllneralm, from there we take the forest road to the bridge that we left on the right as described in the ascent.
If the Roßkar seems too difficult, you can alternatively descend via the Rauchmauerkar. In this case, pay attention to the east-facing exposure and the correspondingly early snow formation.
Public transport
Take the ÖBB to Windischgarsten railway station. From there, take a taxi to the starting point of the tour.Directions
On the A9 motorway, take the Roßleithen exit and continue on the B138 towards Windischgarsten. There follow the signs to Rosenau am Hengstpaß. Continue on the Hengstpassstrasse over the Hengstpaß in the direction of Oberlaussa until you reach a forest road that branches off to the right signposted Admonter Haus.Parking
On the first few metres of this forest road there are a few parking spaces on the left. Make sure that there is enough space for forestry and agricultural equipment to pass.Coordinates
