The Haneburger guesthouse was popular as a stopover after one of the many ski tours possible in the Wattental. In autumn 2022, the building was taken over by a new owner who, however, did not receive permission from the municipality for his renovation plans. Since then, the throats of thirsty ski tourers remain dry. Opposite the Hirzer, a second classic ski tour begins here. The Malgrübler rises on the west side of the Wattental even a few meters higher than its neighboring fashion mountain. The ascent is also much more varied – besides beautiful alpine meadows, there are also shady, steep cirques to cross. Avalanche danger is also a more frequent topic here – even crossing along the road to the Waz Hochleger is occasionally overrun by large avalanches from the steep flanks of the Roßkopf above. Inside the Malgrübler cirque itself, conditions should also be safe. Although it is now well-known that a rewarding ascent from the east leads to this Tux parade peak, the tour is far less frequented than the slopes opposite at Hirzer.
Another ascent option leads from the Voldertal to the Malgrübler. Once the long forest road approach is behind you, you find very beautiful, extensive west-facing slopes that generally are also only lightly tracked. Regardless of which ascent we choose to climb the Malgrübler – with good visibility, we can expect a great panorama of the entire Tux Alps extending to the Zillertal main ridge, with a deep view north into the Inn valley and a view of the rocky mountains of the Karwendel.
Ascent About 100 m before the guesthouse, a path goes down to the right to a bridge over the Wattenbach. After the bridge, we can ascend immediately to the right directly over a meadow and soon reach the alpine road again, which leads us to the Wazalm. We ascend to the left at the alpine pasture directly over the meadows and shorten some of the road's hairpin bends until it turns distinctly to the left. Now on the road through a steep gully southwards to the Waz Hochleger. The pull path continues a bit further and then ends at the entrance to the Malgrübler cirque. Through the cirque, we ascend over an initial steep section and reach a flat floor. This is bordered to the south by steep flanks, through which a steeper gully on the left leads us up to the ridge. On the flat ridge or to the right of it, we now go south until we can cross to the right into the west flank, which leads us over a last steep slope to the summit.Descent Along the ascent route.
