Kilnprein is a typical Nockberg and offers fine descent possibilities on the not really steep southern flank but is often clearly wind-exposed there.

The rather easy ski tour leads after a longer forest path finally in the cirque on alpine pastures to the Steinbach saddle, then over the wide and open southern flank moderately steep to the summit cross and behind it to the flat summit plateau.

    Author’s recommendation

One could also ascend to the summit via Rosatinalpe over the Geiger and the eastern ridge.

    Roadbook

From the Nesselbach valley we soon turn right onto the forest path and walk around the eastern ridge of the Reißeck into the Steinbach valley. Passing the ruined mountain hut, we do not go towards Rosatinalpe, but stay in the valley. At the height of the Steinbach hut the forest clears, we cross the wide cirque up to the Steinbach saddle. Now we turn right and ascend almost freely, following the terrain, over the wide southern flank in the hollow or its side flanks northwards up to the summit cross of Kilnprein. The highest point of the flat summit plateau is still a bit further north.

    Descent along the ascent route.
