Safety information
Avalanche danger is significantly higher than crevasse fall danger, but the Krumlkees is by no means crevasse-free. Avalanche danger threatens especially on the pull path to the Bräualm from the northern precipices of the Ritterkopf, then from the Sagkogelkar in front of the Rohrmooseralm and on the steep Krumlkees.Tips and suggestions
When circling the Hocharn summit, a second 3000-meter peak can be climbed without particular problems (Grieswies Schwarzkogel, 3116m)Roadbook
From the parking lot, it goes level to the Lechnerhäusl. To the right, across a meadow up to the alpine path into the Krumlbachtal. Now begins a long and relatively gentle ascent around the northern precipices of the Ritterkopf (sometimes over avalanche knobs) through the narrow Krumlalm to the Bräuhütte. Here the valley is somewhat wider, we cross the Krumlbach and hike over the moderately steep outlet of the Sagkogelkar (often a large avalanche cone) up to the alpine path, which crosses somewhat exposed to the right of the waterfall at the foot of a rock face to the Rohrmoosalm. Here the valley widens. On the right side of the valley ascending-wise, we walk through the Wasserfallalm and enter the wide trough valley in a very wide left curve, gently ascending into the Rosskar. Over hollows and moraine ridges, we approach the Krumlkees. Two ascents are now offered:
1.) In a right curve on the very steep glacier slope in several switchbacks up to below the Upper Jausenscharte and over the steep northwest ridge (possibly also on foot) to the summit (=our descent!).
2.) We keep more to the left and ascend the somewhat less steep slopes toward Grieswies Schwarzkogel. A distinctive ramp under the Hocharn north wall is overcome in several switchbacks, and finally we ascend in a steep hollow to the wide Grieswiessattel. A short excursion to the north leads us over scree or firn to the unadorned Grieswies Schwarzkogel (3116m). Back to the saddle. Two options now take us to the Hocharn:
a.) As far as possible with skis and then on foot (crampons?) along the firn edge of the first quite steep northeast ridge, possibly bypassing small rocks on the north side, onto the summit roof and again with skis southwards on the summit ridge to the highest point with a double cross.
b.) We traverse from the saddle slightly downhill around a rock spur to the Hocharnkees and approach the normal ascent on the south flank. Over the finally steep south slope, it goes in a few switchbacks to the spacious summit of the Hocharn with two crosses.
Descent along the ascent or as described under 1.): on the southwest ridge (or slightly right of it in the steep north flank) we glide down toward the Upper Jausenscharte and cross here into the Krumlkees to the right. Depending on snow quality, we swing over the wide and steep slopes down into the Rosskar and return via the ascent route to the starting point.
