Impressive Descent over the 1600-Meter East Slope

The Hocharn in the Rauris Valley is one of the showcase ski touring mountains of the High Tauern. With an obstacle-free east slope over 1600 m high, it forms, alongside the Sonnblick, the impressive valley end of Kolm-Saigurn. As soon as in spring the toll road from Bodenhütte to Lenzanger opens, whole hordes of ski tourers flock to the highest peak of the Goldberg group. Those who come earlier in the year can – assuming a safe avalanche situation – experience the Hocharn comparatively quietly. Then, after an overnight stay in the Naturfreundehaus or at the Ammererhof, it can of course be ascended just as well. Both houses offer a shuttle service from the parking lot at Bodenhütte – the approach on foot along the closed road takes about an hour and a half.
The ascent requires an experienced and fit ski mountaineer who can secure walking with crampons in hard conditions. Otherwise, hardly any surprises are to be expected. The glacier with few crevasses is usually crossed without a rope, and since the tour is very frequently undertaken, traces are almost always found. However, one should consider the mountain's altitude – at over 3000 meters it can become bitterly cold in windy conditions, and unlike the neighboring Sonnblick, there is no shelter at the summit.
The descent is an absolute highlight both in powder (assuming a safe avalanche situation) and in firn, unmatched in the High Tauern. Although this is no longer a secret, despite the large crowds it is often still possible to find an untouched spot for a personal trace in the endlessly wide slopes.

Ascent From the parking lot, a road leads south towards Naturfreundehaus Kolm-Saigurn. After leaving the forest, a bridge leads right over the brook. Over a gentle slope, we reach the foot of the rock ridge, where the right part of the Hocharn east wall breaks downwards. To the left, a moderately steep hollow ascends under the north flank of the Sonnblick. On a terrace, we cross to the right upwards and over another step reach the large basin between Hocharn and Sonnblick. To the right of the basin, a 1000 m slope without noticeable flat sections leads up to the summit. Initially, we ascend over the ridge right of the basin, then along a ramp rising from left to right. A somewhat steeper slope (just under 35 degrees) now leads us onto the slightly crevassed Hocharn glacier, and in a right-left-right loop, we reach the summit.Descent Many variations are possible in the vast east slope's upper part. However, when visibility is poor, one should descend along the ascent track, as a few
