The Großer Kinigat is an impressive summit in the Carnic Alps. It is accessible via a steep ramp on the south side. This is very exposed and only recommended for sure-footed mountaineers. From the summit, there is a fantastic view of the Sexten Dolomites as well as the Venediger and Glockner groups.

    Safety information

The route requires absolutely safe avalanche conditions, as a long traverse in terrain up to 40° steep has to be completed.
The ascent over the ramp is exposed in places.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot, after crossing the road, you follow a short stretch of the path or trail heading southwest down to the lowest point (approx. 1465m). Then follow a path into the forest - it turns south after a short time and descends slightly. Then with a gentle ascent, continue always heading south into the Erschbaumer Valley.

Just before the valley end, immediately before a large rock barrier at about 1800m, you then head southeast over a slope up to 30° into the Tscharre. Through this beautiful wide high valley, you reach a clearly recognizable saddle via finely terraced terrain. Here opens a wonderful view of the Sexten Dolomites as well as the Standschützen Hut located on the Karnischer Höhenweg.

Now descend a few altitude meters again towards the west and then always traverse the 35-40° steep slopes heading west below the rock walls of the Großer Kinigat until you reach the ski depot at the start of the distinctive ramp.

From there, on foot up the steep ramp (crampons are highly recommended here). In summer, this very exposed ascent is secured by a steel cable; in winter, however, it is deeply buried in the snow – kind souls have partially installed an additional safety cable here. Then a short, easy section over the western ridge to the clearly visible summit (cross).

    Descent via the ascent route.
