Selected alternatives for you
The Griesenerkar is a true classic in the Wilder Kaiser. Especially in spring, when the toll road to the Griesner Alm is already open, the route is highly recommended!

The route is possible throughout the winter, but due to the high and shady starting point at 1,000 meters, the Griesenerkar is particularly popular in spring. The cirque is always ski-piste-like or even churned up to a mogul slope then. From the Griesenerkar, there are several ski touring destinations:

    - Over the Schönwetterfensterl, 40 - 45 degrees steep to the western Hochgrubachspitze.

    - Regalpscharte

    - small Goinger Törl

    - Goinger Törl

The easiest ascent leads to the Goinger Törl and also because, due to the east-facing orientation, the sun shines there first, it is the most popular ski touring destination.

On the descent, you can also pass the Fritz-Pflaum Hut. Even if the hut is not staffed, it is a nice place to rest and have a snack.

According to the Swiss ski touring scale, the route is classified as slightly difficult - ZS from 35 degrees.

    Author’s recommendation

For refreshments, the cozy parlor and, especially in spring, the lovely terrace of the Griesner Alm are recommended!

    Safety information

The impressive cirque at the Schönwetterfensterl with the summit option to the western Hochgrubachspitze is, of course, very appealing, but it is much steeper and often icy due to its north-facing location, making it a completely different challenge than the ascent described here to the Goinger Törl.

    Roadbook

Ascent: From the Griesner Alm over the bridge and along the forest road through the woods a bit to the west to a clearing. From here, a pleasant track leads up to the summer path just below the rock walls. Now cross upward to the southeast (left) through sparse beech forest. You reach the lower section of the still narrow cirque here, where it is best to ascend further south in switchbacks in the western (right) half. At 1,750 meters, you must decide whether to head southeast (left) to the Fritz-Pflaum Hut or, as we did, southwest, right past the Kleinkaiser, continuing to ascend. Soon the cirque opens to the Goinger Törl and we ascend increasingly steeply to the west (right) further up to the Törl. Berg Heil!

Descent: The descent can be done along the ascent route. Additionally, there is the option to head east and cross as high as possible south (right) past the Kleinkaiser to reach the Fritz Pflaum Hut. From there, the descent continues northwest into the cirque already familiar from the ascent.

Variants: When descending to the Fritz-Pflaum Hut, on the right are the three cirques: Kleines Goinger Törl, Regalpscharte, and via the Schönwetterfensterl to the western Hochgrubachspitze.

    Public transport

From the Kufstein Intercity train station, take bus no. 4030 to Kössen, and then bus no. 4000 to Griesenau. Unfortunately, this greatly extends the route to reach the actual starting point at the Griesner Alm.

    Directions

Coming from the Inn valley (Innsbruck), leave the A12 at Wörgl East and take the B178 via Scheffau and Going to St. Johann in Tirol. Here turn left onto the B176 to Griesenau.

Coming from the west (Munich), take the A93 at the Rosenheim Autobahn intersection and leave it at Niederndorf. Then continue on B173 to Kössen.

Coming from the east (Salzburg), leave the A8 at the Grabenstätt exit and continue via Grassau, Marquartstein, and Schleching to Kössen. From there, continue south to Griesenau.

In Griesenau, head west and take the toll road to the Griesner Alm. The toll road is usually closed annually from mid-January to the end of February depending on snow conditions. The toll fee is 4 EUR (as of 2019).

    Parking

Directly below the Griesner Alm is a very large free parking lot.
