The Freithofberg is a popular excursion mountain in the Mostviertel between Waidhofen/Ybbs and Maria Neustift.
As a ski route, the south side from the fire station to the summit (260 meters elevation) was often done.
In recent years, a parking lot was gratefully cleared on a meadow here.
2018 was a May beetle year. The meadow on the south side of the Freithofberg was infested by grubs, had to be broken up and reseeded. Therefore, the south side may not be accessed this winter (so probably no parking will be provided).
The flat, beautiful ascent (along the roadside = AV marking with the crossing on the south side towards the west and then eastwards to the summit) should be possible.
Ascent and descent on the east side starting at the waysign above Haunoldstein should also be possible, but there are few options to park the car here.
Ascent and descent on the north and northwest side should be possible (parking also difficult!).

At Christmas time, a nice nativity scene is set up about 300 m east of the summit.
A nice alpine hut was built on the summit meadow (possibly with refreshment opportunity).
Roadbook
From the fire station on the road leading diagonally left (west) upwards to the last farmhouse. Continue in the same direction across meadow, through forest to the next farmhouse. Further westwards (wonderful view of the Reichraminger Hintergebirge), then eastwards along the ridge over more meadows and through forest to the summit meadow with alpine hut and further to the summit cross.
There are now three descent options. Always eastwards to a hut where a nativity scene is set up at Christmas time, then either
a) northwards = steep = former ski area
b) eastwards = along the ridge to a road. Shortly left and continue on a beautiful meadow to the forest edge.
c) southwards = to the starting point (fire station).
Directions
From Waidhofen/Ybbs westwards on the L93
or from Großraming eastwards on the L557
to the highest point (= fire station) = Kreuzgruberhöhe.
Parking
A parking lot near the fire station is usually cleared.
Keep the marked parking spaces of the fire brigade clear for possible operations.
