Dobratsch from Rosstratte
The easy ski route, ideal for ski tour beginners or for starting at the beginning of the season, culminates in a magnificent 360° panoramic view.
The Villach local mountain is also a popular summit destination in winter. The slope-like prepared summit trail, which leads from Rosstratte almost all the way up to the summit cross, but also the possibility to leave this path for short excursions into open terrain, make this described route attractive even for ski touring beginners. The starting point over 1700 m high enables the route early in the ski touring season when there is no snow in the lower areas yet.
The 2166 m high summit is adorned with the beautiful Knappenkreuz. From here you can overlook all of Carinthia: On clear days the view ranges from Großglockner in the west to the Koralpe in the east, and from the Dreiländereck in the south to the Hochalmspitze in the north. The modern but cozy summit hut invites you to warm up and satisfy hunger and thirst.
The descent is easy on the prepared summit trail, but variations in open terrain are also possible. (Please observe and respect the nature zones of the nature park!) Those who arrived by bus can also ski down to the valley at Heiligengeist in good snow conditions, extending the descent by around 750 vertical meters.
Author’s recommendation
An inexpensive and environmentally friendly way to arrive is by the nature park bus from Villach!
Those who arrived by bus also have the possibility to ski down to the valley at Heiligengeist.

Safety information
Mostly safe winter tour, but study the current avalanche report before the tour!
Avalanche report for Carinthia
The ascent and descent mostly follow the slope-prepared summit trail; only the section over the Zehnernock (which can also be bypassed) leads through slightly steep, open terrain. Even with descent variations near the summit trail (observe nature zones!) the slope gradient remains low to moderate.
Caution is advised at the narrow ridge that leads in the summit area from the weather hut to the summit cross, especially when icy or with cornices!
The Zwölferkogel lies within a nature zone and should not be entered in winter out of consideration for the wildlife.

Roadbook
Starting from the Rosstratte car park (1731 m), we follow the prepared and well-marked summit trail with snow poles. After a hairpin bend (approx. 1800 m), we cross a slope with a slight ascent until we turn left onto the mostly tracked climb to the Zehnernock. After about three-quarters of an hour of walking, we reach the viewpoint (former lift hut) at Zehnernock (1956 m). Whether we remove skins for the short descent back to the summit trail or slide down the slope with skins under the skis depends on the conditions and is our individual decision. Of course, those who wish can also stay on the summit trail and simply bypass the Zehnernock to the north.
Over the saddle between Zwölfer- and Elfernock (approx. 2015 m), continuing along the summit trail, we reach the transmitter and the summit hut on Dobratsch after another hour. From there we ascend in a few minutes to the weather hut. Here we take off our skis and carefully cross the narrow ridge (caution with ice or cornices!) to the Knappenkreuz at the summit of Dobratsch (2166 m).
After a rest in the summit hut, we ski down the summit trail. We manage the short ascent and the following flat section near Elfernock with a skating stride, or we take off the skis briefly and carry them for a short distance – putting skins back on is not worth it here. From now on, the summit trail leads pleasantly downhill, but descent variations in open terrain (observe nature zones of the nature park!) are also possible. For a leisurely descent from Dobratsch to Rosstratte, about three-quarters of an hour should be planned. Those who arrived by bus can ski from Rosstratte via the former ski slope down to the valley at Heiligengeist and continue from there for the return journey.
