On the way to the highest peak in central Switzerland, you experience the Rhone Glacier along its full length: From the ice cave at the glacier tongue to the highest point at 3630 m, you cover almost 11 kilometers. The Dammastock is therefore a pure ski mountain; without the fast descent, this route would be quite exhausting. Also, the danger of falling into crevasses on the Rhone Glacier is considerably lower on skis. There is only a short time window in late spring/early summer when this route is possible, specifically when the Furka Pass is fully open. The opening depends on snow conditions and therefore varies from year to year. At the lower glacier part, you often find bare ice, but above, dreamlike firn conditions prevail. The beautiful view of the glacier world and the 4000 m peaks in Valais compensate more than enough for the somewhat lengthy ascent. The descent over the gently sloping glacier then runs relaxed like on a blue piste.
