Imposing ski mountain with two great descent options

This imposing western corner pillar of the Stubai Alps is one of the most beautiful ski tour mountains that can be approached from the Ötztal. The Breite Grieskogel rises over 2000 meters above the Ötztal village of Umhausen, but these do not have to be overcome in one go. You can ski up a bit to Niederthai and then split the ascent into two easier stages with an overnight stay at the Schweinfurter Hut. The Breite Grieskogel is especially suitable for the last day of a hut stay. The often quite flat but very scenic ascent over the Längentaler notch can be perfectly combined with one of the two excellent descents that lead directly north. While the first option through the Larstigtal might allow for a subsequent climb back to the hut, it doesn’t make much sense after a descent through the steep Grastal. This ends just over a kilometer above the parking lot in Niederthai. Which of the two descents you choose also depends on the prevailing conditions. While Larstigtal is still passable with moderate avalanche danger, absolutely safe conditions are required in the Grastal.

Ascent to the Hut Along the road (snowmobile track), which is also used as a toboggan run, we hike on the right side of the stream into the valley up to the Larstighof. After another kilometer, the road leads left over a bridge. Here, a track often goes straight ahead and after about 50 meters of elevation gains, turns left over a brook, allowing for a slight shortcut. After approximately 2 hours in total, we reach the Schweinfurter Hut.Ascent to the Summit From the hut, we first head left of the stream very gently southward into the Zwieselbachtal. Only after about 3 kilometers does the slope noticeably increase, and through several short, also still not particularly steep steps, we move into the wide valley end. Here, we turn right upwards and a final slope now 25 degrees steep leads up to the Zwieselbachjoch. Across a rolling plateau, we now traverse southwards where we meet the often-used ascent route from the Winnebachsee Hut. This now leads always on the right side of the ridge,
