Bischofsmütze (2,640 m) - a mountain with two names
There are only a few ascent descriptions for this summit in the farthest Pfischertal valley, which is popularly known as Bischofsmütze because of its double summit, but is listed on official maps as the 2,640 m high Hintere Langspitz. Due to its steep ascent, ski touring here like on many peaks of the Pfitscher mountains is only possible very late in spring when the snow has consolidated enough to allow a relatively safe ascent. For ambitious ski mountaineers, the Bischofsmütze offers an approximately 450 m long and up to 45° steep couloir that can also be descended on skis under favorable conditions, thus allowing one to emulate the famous steep face skier Heini Holzer, who also descended this couloir. An alternative to descending this west couloir is the less steep east-side descent into the mountain valley, followed by the ascent of the also little-known 2,778 m high Hochsäge, with return and descent to Viedalm and thus back to the starting point. This alternative offers insight into a very remote and lonely mountain world and surely satisfies all demands.

From the starting point, cross the bridge over the Pfitscherbach. First follow the forest road and later the trail following the signpost to Viedalm. The path is initially flat on foot, later steeper through dense forest up to the tree line where you reach the huts of Viedalm (approx. 1.5h). Here, skis can mostly be strapped on. Behind the alm, the Bischofsmütze with the west couloir becomes visible, which is approached on a straight path. Climb through the couloir to the saddle and then over the rocky ridge (II) to the summit (approx. 2h from Viedalm).
The descent can either follow the ascent route or, following the track stored with this tour, descend eastward from the saddle about 200 meters into the mountain valley to Langsee. From here, ascend southwards to the notch in the ridge and then follow it northeast to the summit of Hochsäge (1 h from the saddle).
The descent proceeds along the ascent path back to the notch and then further below the ridge westwards down to the mountain ridge branching off to the north where the Hintere Langspitz rises. From here, initially steep and later over beautifully undulating terrain, descend into the wide valley to Viedalm. From Viedalm, return along the ascent route to the starting point (approx. 2.5h).
