The whole family can do a joint ski tour on the Birgitzköpfl, from children to grandparents. For children, it is a great introduction to ski touring as they can safely be "in the terrain" and yet find piste-like conditions. Furthermore, everyone shares a common "summit experience." For the experienced hikers, it is definitely possible to continue to the Nockspitze. The less fit family members descend to the Birgitzer Alm, where everyone can meet again (for the joint descent). This way, everyone can enjoy a nice day of ski touring together.

    Author’s recommendation

A stop at the Birgitzer Alm is always recommended.

    Safety information

When crossing the toboggan run, watch out for descending sledders!

    Tips and suggestions

Information about the opening hours of the Birgitzer Alm at: Tel.: +43 (0) 664 - 59 700 26

The time indications under the point "Duration" refer to the entire route including ascent and descent, but without breaks.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot, a small trail (summer path) immediately branches off to the right into the forest. Straight ahead begins the toboggan run. Upwards over the summer path with a pleasant incline and through a wonderful winter landscape. Soon you reach the toboggan run again and cross it (watch out for descending sledders!). Continuing again through the forest until a clearly pronounced forest clearing is reached. Up this to a large cross and a fountain. From now on always upwards over the piste-like forest clearing, crossing the toboggan run several times. Soon the hut of the Birgitzer Alm becomes visible and the alm is reached. Right behind the hut rises the flat summit dome of the Birgitzköpfl and behind it the rock formation of the Nockspitze. You now inevitably head towards this. The small wooden cross on the Birgitzköpfl is only seen at the very end and reached in a small right bend.

The descent takes place over beautiful flat, obstacle-free terrain to the alm and then further over the distinct forest clearing to the large metal cross at Hüttboden. From here you soon reach the toboggan run keeping left and drive the last meters over it back to the starting point.

With very good snow conditions, it is possible to take variants through the forest. The hollow path used for the ascent should be avoided for the descent as it is quite narrow and would hinder other ascending ski tourers or snowshoe hikers.

    Public transport

    Public-transport-friendly

Current timetable information is available at www.vvt.at. During the ski season, an hourly ski bus runs from the main station to Axamer Lizum, stopping directly at the start of the toboggan run.

    Directions

From Innsbruck via Kematen to Axams. Take the second exit at the roundabout. At the next intersection / junction turn right onto Lizumer Straße and ascend towards Axamer Lizum. In a hairpin turn is Gasthof Adelshof. A few meters further, in the next hairpin, there is a small parking lot for about 6 cars directly at the start of the toboggan run to Birgitzer Alm. Otherwise, there are plenty of parking spaces shortly before on both sides of the road.

    Parking

Plenty of free parking directly in the curve at the start of the toboggan run or on the left and right sides of the road above the Gasthof Adelshof. Do not park at Adelshof (unless you plan to stop there)!
