The Alpspitze is not only the landmark of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but also offers ski tourers a challenging destination. While the nearby ski resort does take a bit of a toll on the area’s unspoiled nature and tranquility, the lifts make for a shorter ascent, and the snow-covered slopes allow for a descent into the valley well into spring.
There is no easy ascent to the steep summit pyramid in winter. Even the easiest route via the Bernadeinrücken and the Oberkar requires some light climbing and breaking trail through snow on an exposed ridge as you approach the summit. The direct ascents via the Schöngänge or even via the Alpspitz via ferrata—which are also regularly undertaken in winter and spring—present a greater challenge. The most sought-after destination for downhill-oriented summit aspirants is the direct east-facing descent, which, in good conditions, leads steeply (a good 45 degrees) down into the Oberkar. In spring, however, you have to get an early start here, as the slope is exposed to sunlight almost from sunrise. An overnight stay at the Kreuzeckhaus or the Stuibenhütte is a good alternative to the late start of the lift’s operation (8:30 a.m.) or a very early hike through the ski area and the direct ascent via the Schöngänge.
AscentTake the Alpspitzbahn up to the Osterfelderkopf. Now descend the Osterfelder run toward the southeast until you reach the flat section at the upper end of the Bernadein lift. Take the Bernadein run, or (if snow conditions are safe—a more scenic but ungroomed option) veer right 30 meters before that and descend through the shaded cirque beneath the Bernadein cliffs to just before the valley station of the Bernadein lift. Here, about 80 m before the lift hut, the trail to the Stuibenhütte branches off to the right into the forest. With skins on, follow the trail for about 5 minutes to the “Alpspitze” signpost, where we turn right. Through sparse forest, we ascend southwest up the flat eastern ridge that forms the backside of the Bernadein Walls. The ascent now continues quite leisurely through fields of mountain pines toward Stuibensee. Before reaching the lake, we turn right at a steep ledge through a gully and, after a short, steeper slope, reach another plateau. A gentle
