Three-Country Route - short version
Soon you rejoin the B 83 and via Arnoldstein and Thörl Maglern you reach Tarvis, known for its lively textile market and diverse gastronomic offerings. Several bars, cafes, and pizzerias invite you for a first break. From Tarvis, you head east in a southern direction of the Karawanks towards Slovenia. You can also take the cycle path from Tarvis to Krajnska Gora, which runs on a disused railway line and is fully paved. A detour to the Laghi di Fusine is also highly recommended.
At Ratece, you cross the Italian-Slovenian border and after a few kilometers reach Podkoren, where the route turns left to the Wurzenpass. If time permits, you should also visit the Krajnska Gora ski world cup venue beforehand, an ideal resting spot to recharge.
The climb to the Wurzenpass is moderate, but a short section with a small ramp must be overcome. The descent from the Wurzenpass into the valley can be very fast, as there are some very steep gradients that require cautious riding and good brakes. Once in the valley, you continue via Fürnitz to Finkenstein, where as a grand finale you should take the road on the right up to the Finkenstein Castle Ruins, definitely worth a short stop. In the summer, festival performances and concerts take place in the castle arena with a magnificent view of the surrounding Karawanks and Lake Faak.
A short descent to Latschach and a final 8 km circuit of Lake Faak, the venue of the 1987 Road Cycling World Championship, conclude this unique three-country route.
