The starting point of the route is Grindelwald, the world-famous village at the foot of the Eiger. The route rises already just outside the village and quickly leads to the first heights, offering a view of the wide valley. On the road closed to private traffic, with few bends (only postal buses travel here), you reach the Grosse Scheidegg, with occasional views of the Eiger north face.
At the highest point of the route, the imposing view of the striking Wetterhorn rewards the climb. Following the Rychenbach, the descent passes through the Rosenlaui valley. Soon, the mighty Engelshörner rise on the right side and a stop at the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge is recommended. From here, the route runs mostly straight to the Reichenbach Falls. Those struggling with the heat will find a cool down in the spraying spray of the roaring falls - where Sherlock Holmes fought his arch-enemy. The route descends the mountain in serpentine lines, and speed picks up quickly. Challenging curves and, from Schwarzwaldalp onwards, also individual traffic require caution. At Schattenhalb, the route leads out of the partly forested final section and crosses the nearby source of the Aare river on the way to the village center of Meiringen.
There is connection to the postal bus line along the entire route.
Author’s recommendation
Stop at Schwarzwaldalp: Worth it for a delicious lunch on the terrace of the Chalet-Hotel Schwarzwaldalp. By the way, you can also spend a peaceful night here. Below Schwarzwaldalp is the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge. A wonderful cool down on hot days.
