If you include Lake Garda itself, you actually circle five lakes. If it weren’t for the somewhat tedious start along the Gardesana with the annoying tunnels and usually heavy traffic on the west side – the 4-lake route over Valvestino, Idro, Ampola (even though it’s just a small lake) and Ledro would be a true dream. But you have to bite into the sour shoreline road apple until you can leave the lake at Limone.
From Riva along the west shore of Lake Garda to Limone sul Garda ➊ (ferry alternative). Then turn right onto SP 115 towards Vesio. Through Vesio and onwards on SP 38. Climb to Tremosine ➋, downwards to Gardola and continue always on this road until Gargnano ➌. Next climb to Lago di Valvestino, turning right ➍ onto SP 9. At Lago di Valvestino ➎ along the eastern shore towards Idro. At the junction ➏ turn left towards Idro. Through Zumie and follow SP 58 in a right-hand hairpin ➐. At the northern end of Lake Idro turn right, cross the inlet ➑ and right onto SS 237 along the west shore. Before Cà Rosso ➒ keep right on SS 240. Then right ➓ over the river bridge and through Storo ⓫, onwards to Tiarno. From there to Ledro and along the eastern lakeshore ⓬. Through Molina di Ledro and down to the Ponale Tunnel ⓭. Right onto the Ponale road (gravel sections!) and back to Riva.
