Way of St. James Hungary: Budapest - Zsámbék
Pilgerwege Ungarn
We start in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, at the 0 km stone, which can be found at the foot of the Castle Hill by the Danube. In Hungary, the kilometers for each long-distance road are counted from this stone. After we pass the tunnel - the beginning of the pilgrim route - the traffic becomes increasingly less, and the path leads through ever quieter streets.
Out of the city, it goes uphill until we reach "Normafa", a popular excursion destination. From here, there is a magnificent view of Budapest.
From here, a beautiful, wooded path leads to the "Makkosmaria" church and further to the edge of Budakeszi, past single-family homes on small paths, up to a fenced forest. After the forest, we arrive in Páty, where there is the opportunity to eat in a beautiful Hungarian "Csárda". For spiritual nourishment, a small chapel awaits us. After Páty, we proceed along an acacia path and reach the straight Töker path, which leads us for about 10 km through an agricultural area.
Along the way at the "Újmajor" church, we can rest. Ahead of us, we can already see Zsámbék, our destination for today.
After the straight path, we reach Tök, which is a suburb of Zsámbék. From here, we reach the Catholic church in Zsámbék.
Note(s)
The Way of St. James in Hungary from Budapest to Wolfsthal runs continuously on the western or southern side of the Danube. Wolfsthal is located slightly southwest of Bratislava, making the continuation of the route westward from Wolfsthal also a path for pilgrims coming from Slovakia.
In Budapest, there are only a few Way of St. James markings. From Normafa to the Makkosmária church, there are also tourist signs. From the Makkosmária church onwards, there are only the Way of St. James markings again. In the forest between Budakeszi and Páty, the red M signs guide us, identical to the Meteor hiking trail. From Páty to Tök, there are only Way of St. James markings again. From Zsámbék onwards, we meet the Maria Way again.
