The route is named after Kaspar Stockalper, a rich merchant so powerful that he was called “the King of the Simplon.” Stockalper designed the route in the mid-1600s to facilitate trade exchanges with Italy by crossing the Alps.
A great advantage of the Via Stockalper is the possibility to alternate walking and bus travel. It is indeed possible to cover parts on the famous autopostale or aboard the Green Train of the Alps.

N.B.: In the GPX track, you will notice a straight line; this is the section from Gondo to Iselle, where it is currently necessary to take a bus, as this section is not walkable on foot.
