From Augsburg, we first hike southwards past the "New East Cemetery" to Hochzoll, before turning eastwards to Friedberg and even circling the Friedberg quarry lake northwards again. Behind Friedberg, it goes westwards back, and we return to the Lech at the southern end of Hochzoll, which will be our companion for the rest of the day.
The Lech is largely canalized along our route, but we also pass through floodplains and nature reserves that create buffer zones during floods and are thus occasionally flooded. We pass lakes and weirs, and in addition to hydroelectric power plants, also solar installations for additional energy generation.
The town center of Prittriching lies slightly east of our route – in this sparsely populated area it is worthwhile to find and reserve accommodation in advance. Our today's path ends at the Lech weir 21.
Note(s)
The "Via Romea" has various names, such as "Via Romea Stadensis" or "Via Romea Germanica." This pilgrimage route runs from northern Germany southwards over the Alpine pass "Brenner" to Rome. The route goes back to Abbot Albert of Stade, who set out for Rome in 1236 to obtain from Pope Gregory IX permission for stricter church discipline.
However, this north-south connection also allows pilgrims coming from the east to turn southwards towards Rome, and enables pilgrims coming from the north to turn westwards towards Santiago de Compostela.
