This stage is a bit longer than most other stages on the Via Imperii, covering about 35 kilometers. However, there are many opportunities to interrupt this stage.
In the second part of the route, we enter the "Leipziger Neuseenland," a landscape created multiple times by human hands. The first shaping was due to the open-pit mining of lignite, where large amounts of soil material were removed and overburden not usable as coal was piled up around the area. After the closure of this open-pit mine, the resulting craters were flooded and today serve various purposes, namely as flood retention basins for the streams Eula and Kyhra, as a water reserve for commercial fishing, as a recreational area, and also as a water reserve for the Lippendorf power plant. Our route passes between some of these lakes, mostly on the deposits that were piled up at that time.
This stage ends in Borna at the Marien Church.
Note(s)
The "Via Imperii" runs from Stettin (Szczecin) at the border between Poland and Germany in a southwest direction to Hof at the border between Germany and the Czech Republic, connecting Stettin with Berlin, Wittenberg, Leipzig, Zwickau, and Hof. Along the way, the Via Imperii crosses a number of further pilgrimage routes.
