Pilgrimage in Steiermark means finding calm step by step – while discovering Austria’s most diverse hiking region. The Mariazell Pilgrimage Route leads from the wine country of Southern Styria to the alpine mountain world around Mariazell. Along this pilgrimage route in Austria, nature, culture, and culinary experiences come together to create a unique journey – both outward and inward.

The Mariazell Pilgrimage Route through Steiermark is one of the most significant pilgrimage routes in the Alps and a classic long-distance hiking trail, leading through completely diverse landscapes across 11 daily stages:

    • The forests and vineyards of Südsteiermark
    • The cultural region around Graz
    • The alpine pastures around the Naturpark Almenland
    • The high-alpine mountain world of the Naturpark Mürzer Oberland

Enjoyment & Culinary Delights: The first stages lead through Southern Styria – home of Schilcher wine. Traditional Buschenschänken invite you to linger, turning the trail into a culinary experience as well.

Art & Culture: With Graz, one of Austria’s most exciting cities lies directly along the route. Highlights such as the historic old town and Schloss Eggenberg provide cultural variety along the long-distance hike.

Alpine Pastures & Mountains: From the Almenland Nature Park onwards, the landscape changes: wide alpine pastures, forests, and higher elevations characterise the second half of the Mariazell Trail.

From the Schanz above Fischbach, the trail splits:

    • Variant A – sporty & alpine: via Mitterdorf im Mürztal and the Hohe Veitsch – more demanding, with alpine sections and impressive mountain scenery.
    • Variant B – gentle & cultural: through the Waldheimat of Peter Rosegger – quieter, culturally shaped, and rich in varied landscapes.

    Author’s recommendation

    Cycling Pilgrimage in the Hochsteiermark
Cycling pilgrimage combines cycling, experiencing nature, and inner reflection. Across four routes leading to Mariazell, the focus is not on speed, but on mindful travel — with time for breaks, encounters, and personal thoughts. The combination of movement, landscape, and spiritual places makes a cycling pilgrimage to Mariazell a truly special journey: being on the move while, at the same time, arriving within oneself.

The first stage leads mostly downhill through forests, offering views of the idyllic Südsteiermark. An ideal start to arrive and settle into the rhythm of the trail. In Eibiswald the trail also intersects with the Hiking Trail From Glacier to Wine, which connects the Dachstein Glacier with the wine region.

    Stage 2
    Eibiswald (361 m) – Bad Schwanberg (404 m) – Deutschlandsberg (368 m)

    Emergency call mountain rescue: 140

Tips when reporting an emergency – Answer these six WH questions: What happened? How many people are injured? Where did the accident happen (are there GPS coordinates)? Who is reporting the incident (callback number)? When did the accident happen? What is the weather like at the site of the incident?

Proper backpack packing makes many things easier: Pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within reach in a side pocket. All the things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit, including blister plasters, belongs in every rucksack and it is always advisable to dress in layers.
