Francis path 2nd stage / Spello-Montefalco
With my brother Horst, we walked the second section from Assisi to Rome in 12 stages at the end of September 2025.
If you want to walk the pilgrimage route, you should be aware that it is located in the mountains of Tuscany and Umbria.
Among other things, you will experience long stages with many steep ascents and descents sometimes up to 1000 meters elevation gain, and that with a heavy backpack. Therefore, it is advisable to prepare well physically and organizationally. To look at the GPS data of the stages very closely and complement them for accommodation.
Our second stage first led us without significant climbs and sights through small villages to the other side of the Foligno valley. There we rested in the fortified town of Bevanga. The first traces of settlement date back to 350 BC and it is worth visiting the town.
After the fortified town of Bevanga, it goes uphill steadily over a distance of about 6 km (300 m elevation gain) to Montefalco, and the last 2 km are very steep. Stamina and fitness are required, but the destination rewards you with a wonderful view of Spello and Assisi.
Ps: On all our stages we were surrounded by beautiful nature; we wandered through oak, maple, chestnut forests, olive groves, sparse landscapes, few villages, with great views and wonderful places and towns. We lingered in places where St. Francis was as well; all this and more made us lose track of space and time. We met few pilgrims. Some we met along the way or at the places of our accommodations, ate together, walked a stretch together and exchanged experiences about the motives of our pilgrimage.

Tips and suggestions
Stage planning recommended:
Pilgrim guide Rother Verlag and the Francis path pilgrim guide, Simone & Anton Ochsenknecht, with GPS data, amac-buch Verlag, which we also used for planning. They describe different stages and routes. GPS data were transferred to the Alpine club app, re-planned and then used on all stages. Worked great and precisely. We had the pilgrim guide with us but did not need it.
Pilgrim pass: apply in time (www.viadifrancesco.it) and don't forget to get a stamp from all accommodations.
Accommodations: Listed in each pilgrim guide. We booked in advance on booking.com with free cancellation.
Catering: Almost no possibilities during the stages due to the route guidance. Also, shops are closed during lunchtime. We were well supplied with sufficient breakfast and dinner and for in between with muesli bars, energy gel, isotonic drinks and glucose. The most important thing is to drink.
Water: There are usually no or very few opportunities to refill water on the way. Therefore, take at least 2.5 liters and refill regularly.
