The Charlemagne Path, recognizable thanks to the appropriate signage, takes its name from a 15th-century legend that tells of the passage of the first Roman emperor.
The route develops from the Upper Town of Bergamo to Madonna di Campiglio (TN), it is divided into 12 stages and runs mostly along the mid-slope of the mountain ridges between the two locations.
Although it is a medium difficulty route, it still features some quite challenging uphill and downhill sections, and the altitude changes vary from stage to stage. The path is one-directional and leads towards the mountains.
From Bergamo, going up and down the hills, you reach San Paolo d'Argon, near the Benedictine Abbey. Then, you continue through woods and fields until Cenate Sopra. Here begins the ascent to reach the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Assunta di Monte Misma, then descend to the small village of Luzzana. Continuing almost flat, you first reach Spinone al Lago on Lake Endine and then Lovere. From Lovere, follow the right bank of the Oglio river until the center of Boario Terme, where crossing the town, you pass to the left bank, then return to the right side from Edolo to Ponte di Legno.
Then you ascend to the Tonale Pass, passing by the old hospice of San Bartolomeo, and descend on a path to Vermiglio, the first town of Val di Sole, and later to the Castle of San Michele in Ossana. Reaching the valley floor, you cross some towns, then climb from Dimaro to Campo Carlo Magno Pass. The path then descends through the Rendena Valley to Madonna di Campiglio and ends at the nearby Church of Santo Stefano in Carisolo.
