Burgunderweg: Basel - Ferrette
Pilgerwege Frankreich
From the tri-border area D/CH/F, the Burgunderweg northwest of the Jura curve is the classic route to Le-Puy-En-Velay. Compared to the more direct paths through Switzerland, it is flatter but also longer.
At the beginning of this stage, we walk through the largely traffic-free old town and meet at the market square the impressive town hall made of red brick. At Barfüsserplatz, we turn right and climb a staircase, from where we have a nice view of Barfüsserplatz and the old town at the former prison “Lohnhof.” Then we purposefully leave Basel via Binningen and Allschwil, and then also Switzerland, and suddenly find ourselves in a quiet forest and agricultural area in France.
Along a ridge, we walk westward and enter a forest where the small chapel “St. Brice” invites a stop. The neighboring farm offers refreshments and small snacks depending on the season and weather. Exiting Oltingue, we encounter the church St Martin des Champs, the former massive community church from the 14th century.
Soon we arrive at Ferrette, which lies squeezed in the valley to the left. Passing the local town hall and church, we come into the valley floor. On the right above on the height, the ruins of Château de Ferrette still greet us. Ferrette is a neat and relatively small place, and we will be able to enjoy the evening here.
