Alta Via no. 1 - Stage 2
From Rifugio Biella to Rifugio Fanes
From Rifugio Biella to reach Rifugio Sénnes (in Ladin Ücia de Sénes) you can follow either of the following routes: by the comfortable road no. 6 that makes a huge S and leads easily to the refuge in about an hour;
for about 1 km on this road, then by the path that branches off to the right (southwest; altitude 2260 m; also marked with no. 6) which climbs through the heath up to the nearby wide ridge. Then it descends southwest, then south, through opposite grassy hollows down to the dirt road from which it is a short way to the Rifugio Sénnes, 2,116 m, taking about the same time as the previous route but more interesting for flora and panorama.
From Rifugio Sénnes take road no. 7 heading south, first continuing gently downhill through the grassy hollows across the vast Pian della Lasta, then leaving on the left the path (also marked no. 7) to Rifugio Fodàra Vedla and continuing southwest along the road. Finally, the path enters the narrow gully between Pici Parëis and Col de Rü and descends quickly through tight switchbacks to the flat area where Rifugio Pederü, 1,548 meters, stands.
From Rifugio Pederü the Alta Via delle Dolomiti no. 1 continues through Valùn de Fànes in a very interesting setting. It is possible to be transported by the manager's off-road vehicle to Rifugio Fànes; if you choose to continue on foot, you can follow either the road or shortcuts along trail no. 7, passing through a desolate, almost lunar environment, but very evocative. The surrounding peaks are strangely colored and have a particular charm. After the delightful Le Piciodèl pond, 1,819 m, you pass next to Rü dal Plan (Piano Torrent), climb some switchbacks, and at 1,988 m altitude, turn sharply south. At 2,022 m you leave the road to the nearby Ücia Lavaréla (Rifugio Lavarella, 2,042 m) on the right, cross a small bridge and reach Ücia de Fànes or Rifugio Fànes, 2,060 meters.
