Feeder to the Alsace Jacob's Way that comes from Odilienberg.

21km (7.4 km hard surface of which 2.7 km road)

    +224 - 175 meters of elevation

    = 23.7 performance kilometers

The path largely follows the GR531; at Attenschwiller a shortcut (local path) and between Niederranspach and Helfranzkirch more energy-saving right around the clearing instead of left.

Overnight stays: Allschwil (e.g. Rössli), Wahlbach (e.g. Soleil or Gloriette), I saw nothing similar in between.

Public transport options are extremely rare in Alsace: from Basel direction - if at all - usually only 1 connection early in the evening. Taxi from Sierentz to Wahlbach about 20 €.

Feeder from Basel: Dorenbach roundabout - along the Dorenbach to Allschwiler Weiher - Ofenstrasse, at the edge of the pit, Ochsengasse.

Allschwil - Hägenä (Hegenheim) over the Rosenberg. Then unfortunately the road is the only reasonable connection to Buschwiller (1.3km), but from then on it goes a lot over the flat Alsace hills towards Illfurth. After Attenschwiller more or less follow the GR531 (Grand Randonée from Leymen to approximately Wissembourg).

    Safety information

Apart from the road crossings and the 200m on the D21.4 before Attenschwiller I experienced no danger spots. Also no farm dogs.

    Roadbook

From the Church of St. Peter & Paul on Baslerstrasse (not the village church) to the cemetery, along the cemetery uphill to Rosenberg. At Obern Rosenbergweg cross the border and after 330m turn left over the hill towards Hegenheim. After the house after the 'Station pomp.' a staircase goes down left to the Lörzbach/Lertzbach. On the other side of the valley we come to the junction to Buschwiller. Follow for 1.3km, then slightly right uphill to the church and after [picture] this again left take the Chemin d'Attenschwiller. It takes us over fields at Pt 350 to D473. [picture] Left of the hedge a path continues down the hill. At its end [picture] to the right on the field path down to the Liesbach bridge of the D21.4 (Pt 321).

[picture] Unfortunately, we have to follow the D21.4 for 190m to the left before we can turn left again into a field path. Where this reaches the forest edge, a path goes up to the right (marked as Hohen Weg on the map, but in the village there is a street sign 'Rue des Jardins'). It leads us to the wayside cross at the entrance to Attenschwiller [picture]. Straight ahead (Rue Wilson) and turn left at the next street towards the village church. In the village center, turn right following the GR351 (blue rectangle) on the main street about 300m to the next crossing (Pt 365) [picture]. There, however, we leave it again and choose the shorter way: Rue du Willer and always straight ahead: after the forest strip at Pt361 [picture] and further down at Pt331 [picture]. A footbridge leads over the Willerbach and on the other side a path goes straight uphill to the field path where we meet the GR351 again. We follow it trustingly to Ranspach-le-Bas/Niederranspach, where it crosses the D491 and rises again to Mehlacker. At its end, at the forest edge [picture] you can follow the GR351 or take the path straight through the forest (right of the clearing) somewhat shorter and with less elevation difference, at the diagonal end of the clearing they meet again.

Past beautiful old pollard willows, the wide field path leads up to Helfrantzkirch/Helfrantskirch. There [picture] unfortunately, we have to follow the main road for about 650m again, but soon it goes again over a wide hill ridge towards Zäsingen/Zaessingue. Attention: At the third forest edge on the right, the GR351 turns left to get onto the Baslerweg/Chemin de Bâle, on which we reach the D21.2 after 1km to the right. Either down this road to the village church or on the (asphalted) high path further to the next wayside cross and there steeply down to the village church.

In Zaessingue/Zäsingen, go left beside the church through Rue de l'Eglise to Rue de l'Ecole, on which we go right past the extensive school grounds to reach a field path again. After another 250m watch out: The GR351 turns left and climbs the hill ridge. At the top it goes right again and only gently down to the junction with the D19b in Wahlbach. The Auberge de la Gloriette is on the left, the Hôtel au Soleil can be found straight ahead. The buses here also run only extremely sparsely.

    Public transport

From Basel by bus 48 or from the city center with tram 6 to Allschwil - no problem.

For the return journey it gets more difficult: Public transport options are extremely rare in Alsace: from Basel direction - if at all - usually only 1 connection early in the evening. Taxi from Sierentz to Wahlbach about 20 €.

An overnight stay in a hotel in Wahlbach costs about 60€ (as of 2018-03), so you might as well stay here and continue hiking on the GR531 to Illfurth the next day (train station, almost hourly connections) or in three days to Thann (train station, almost hourly connections).

    Parking

Extremely difficult in Basel and Allschwil! Better to use public transport!
