To the Zugspitze in one day. With almost 16 km in length and over 2000 m of ascent, it is still a physically demanding route. Those who prefer a more relaxed experience can ease the route by taking the cable car twice. With the Ehrwalder Alm cable car and the glacier cable car from Sonnalpin to the summit, you save several hundred meters of elevation.

    Author’s recommendation

On weekends and during summer school holidays, the Zugspitze is a tourist magnet and the paths to the summit are correspondingly busy.

    Safety information

A rockfall helmet can be useful for the section from Sonnalpin to the summit, especially when it is busy.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot of the Ehrwalder Alm cable car, we follow the path to the Lengenfelder Alm. From there, it is well signposted towards the Knorrhütte. At the Gatterl, we cross the border between Austria and Bavaria. Passing the former customs hut, we go on to the Knorrhütte, where the sunny terrace invites you to rest. From the Knorrhütte, the route leads over the Zugspitzplatt towards Sonnalpin. Here, we can stop again and, in bad weather, acute lack of desire, or physical condition deficits, take the cable car to the summit platform. Those who hike the remaining elevation on foot must work their way up a steep scree slope. Where the scree slope meets the rocks, a secured path begins, leading us to the summit plateau.

For the way down, we choose the Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn and then the bus, which brings us to the train station or back to the parking lot of the Ehrwalder Alm cable car.
