One of the highest peaks of the Northern Karwendel range is the massive Wörner, which stands prominently at the curve of the range. It drops steeply northwards to a saddle, from which a surprisingly gentle ridge extends mainly westward. On this ridge is Wörnerkopf, sometimes also called Steinkarkopf, a wonderful viewpoint. The view from here stretches in almost all directions - only Wörner to the south naturally blocks the view. But this is not a disadvantage, as its impressive, forbidding north and west faces can be admired comfortably.
From Mittenwald, easy valley paths lead initially to the foot of Schwarzkopf. Trails guide along its flank to Rehbergalm and then to Zunterweidkopf, a first nice viewpoint. Afterwards, the route mostly continues along the quite easy-to-walk ridge upwards to Wörnerkopf, the goal of this route proposal. After a relaxing summit break, the descent goes via Wörnersattel to Hochlandhütte and through dense forests back to Mittenwald.

Safety information
There are no special hazards along the route suggestion. However, sure-footedness is recommended for the descent from Wörnerkopf to Hochlandhütte!Roadbook
Leave Mittenwald station, turn right immediately at the station square and follow the road until it joins Dammkarstraße. Turn right here, cross the tracks and follow the road in a wide left curve to the Isar. Do not cross it yet but continue close to the shore along Dammkarstraße. This eventually becomes Gebirgspionierstraße and reaches a pedestrian bridge. Cross the Isar on this bridge and continue left on the other side into the street Am Unteren Rain. Take the first opportunity to turn right into Rehbergstraße, which shortly after bends left, rises noticeably and becomes a footpath that keeps the walking direction. Parallel to the federal road for a while, you will bypass a barracks area and eventually reach a road. Turn right here and go under the federal road through the already visible underpass. On the other side, immediately turn right along a parking lot and follow the subsequent driveway. Before this crosses a stream, a sharply left marked trail branches off, which soon leads uphill in several hairpin turns and reaches another crossing driveway. Turn briefly left on this and at the end of the following left curve follow the steep path going right. This leads briskly uphill through the Rehberg forest around Schwarzkopf and takes a path from the right as the terrain levels out. Soon after, the area of Rehbergalm is reached, which is crossed uphill and keeping right in the upper section. As soon as the trail dives back into the forest, the signposted branch to Wörnerkopf follows almost immediately. The trail leads quite directly up to a shoulder and reaches a long clearing. Again, the trail keeps right at the end and shortly after, the trail branch to the left follows. Almost unnoticed, Zunterweidkopf is passed and the good trail now consistently follows the scenic ridge up to Wörnerkopf.
After the scenic summit break, the descent follows the ridge southwards to the nearby Wörnersattel. From there, descend keeping right on a winding trail that requires a bit sure-footedness. After some steeper sections, the terrain becomes clearly flatter and almost comfortably, the trail heads to Hochlandhütte, taking up the trail coming from Rehbergalm on the right. Pass Hochlandhütte and follow a left-keeping trail. This rises briefly but later mostly holds altitude and passes the first branch to Predigtstuhl. After a further rather flat section, it quickly descends through a larch area. Below Predigtstuhl, the terrain flattens again and the trail crosses the lower part of the wide Dammkar. At the following fork keep right and descend parallel to the material cableway of Dammkarhütte to a beginning driveway. This leads unfortunately with only few views and thus unspectacular into the valley and eventually reaches an exit of the Mittenwald bypass road. Follow the road through the underpass to the edge of Mittenwald and turn right at the fork into Alpenkorpsstraße. Take the first opportunity to turn left and descend via a connecting path towards the Isar and cross it on the local road bridge. On the other side, slightly left into Dammkarstraße and follow now familiar ways from the morning route back to the starting point at Mittenwald station.
