Equally impressive as exclusive crossing of Kleine and Große Widderstein. With 1900 meters of altitude difference, 14 kilometers, and climbing sections up to the upper third difficulty grade in unmarked, unclear, brittle, and almost consistently exposed terrain, this is a technically and physically very demanding and serious undertaking for experienced, skilled mountaineers.
While the Große Widderstein is a real magnet for visitors in the Kleinwalsertal despite its already demanding normal route, its "little brother" – the Kleine Widderstein – is nowadays only climbed by locals and specialists due to its unmarked ascents and the arduous approach. The ascent to the north summit of the Kleine Widderstein already includes climbing sections up to difficulty grade II. The following crossing to the south summit increases the difficulty by one grade – provided the jagged, airy ridge is not mostly bypassed on the brittle north face (then still up to II). Some ridge teeth resist direct climbing or are separated from the rest of the ridge by overhanging drops. From the grassy south summit, one descends steep rock steps into the Karlstor – a deep, grassy notch that separates the Kleine Widderstein from the dark north faces of the Große Widderstein.
