The Ilmen ridge connects South Tyrol with Trentino and offers numerous attractive summit destinations. Most of them have remained quite unknown; only the Ultner Hochwart and the namesake Ilmenspitze are visited frequently. Thus, along the route proposal to the secluded Walscher Berg, it is easy to enjoy magnificent panoramas and experience not only flora and fauna but also a particularly atmospheric time on the mountain completely undisturbed.
From St. Gertraud, a good road leads out of the Ultental into the morning still shaded Kirchbergtal. Soon a trail branches off, leading up to the Außerseefeldalm and thus finally into the sun. Past the Alplahner See it becomes calm and lonely, while a small trail now leads the further ascent to a surprisingly generous high plateau directly below the summit. From there it is not far to the scenic summit itself, which invites to a generous break. During the first part of the descent, hands-on climbing on rocks is sometimes necessary, but the further way to the Londaialm and back into the Ultental is clearly more comfortable. Shortly before St. Gertraud, the Ultner Urlärchen awaits as a last highlight before the route proposal ends shortly afterwards at the morning starting point.

At the Edelweiß inn, directly opposite the bus stop, a narrow lane branches off from the main road, which leads uphill to St. Gertraud and is only for residents. Follow this past individual houses, but turn left at the third opportunity before reaching the main settlement. The signposted path 108 turns out to be a paved, wide road and leads immediately uphill. At the second hairpin, markings and signs point right to a meadow where a trail soon appears and helps to shorten a long bend. After the trail merges back into the road, it continues straightforward and briskly further into the valley. At the foot of a slightly pronounced terrain step, stay on the road which here gains height through two quickly successive hairpins. At the exit of the second hairpin, some attention is helpful because the trail branching left shortly afterwards is not easy to overlook. This quickly leads up the wooded slope and reaches a stream and shortly after a fork. Keep right there, following the stream upwards to the Außerseefeldalm.
The trail initially stays right there, reaches the alpine hut and turns left at the barn. In a wide curve, the stream is crossed first, then the trail heads towards the col between Kachelstube and Walscher Berg. But already on a first moderately pronounced terrain step, the trail reaches a signposted junction. Keeping right, marked stones lead over mountain meadows with little ascent to a small rise, behind which a first small lake is passed. Few minutes later, the Alplahner See is reached as the first stage goal of the route proposal. Pass the lake on the left side and follow the trail ascending on the left, which branches off before the Alplahnerscharte. This leads fairly directly and partly steeply to the edge of a rather flat plateau, which is easiest to bypass halfway along the right edge. This is followed by the final ascent to the only slightly higher Walscher Berg, which proves to be an elongated ridge without a true summit.
After an extensive break with beautiful views of the surrounding mountain groups, the descent begins. For this, leave the ridge northwards and descend into the col with numerous scrambling sections. Once there, keep right and follow a trail towards the Klapfbergtal. About halfway, a ruined alpine hut is reached. At the junction there, go left and follow the mountain flank to the Londaialm, which invites for a stop.
At the Londaialm, a road begins that leads into Klapfbergtal. About halfway between the first and second hairpin, a trail branches right which helps shorten some bends and finally reaches a well-developed road in the valley floor. Here turn left and continue descending further into the valley. The path initially stays close to the valley floor, later veers slightly left and leads, now asphalted, in hairpins down into the Ultental. At the forest edge, the hairpins end, and there is an option to continue straight down to a bus stop. For the return to St. Gertraud, however, now turn left on a wide trail ascending back into the forest. The ascent ends soon, and after crossing a not too wide meadow, the trail leads to the famous Ultner Urlärchen. A few meters below, an asphalted road begins that continues straight, leading back to the morning starting point in St. Gertraud.
Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
The starting point in the last village of the Ultental can be easily reached by public transport. For this, take the train from Bolzano or Mals to Merano or Untermais and continue with bus 245 into the Ultental. The route description begins and ends directly at the terminus of this line in St. Gertraud.Directions
Take state road 38 Bolzano - Merano (MeBo) up to the Merano South exit and follow the signs to Lana. Once in town, keep going straight and at the second roundabout take the first exit into the Ultental. Finally follow state road SP 9 through the entire Ultental to St. Gertraud.Parking
At the entrance to St. Gertraud, shortly after the Edelweiß inn and the bus stop, there are sufficient parking spaces along the road. The route description starts there.
Alternatively, continue along the state road through two hairpins and park below the church between the hotels Arnstein and Ultnerhof following the signs to St. Gertraud. From there at about the same elevation, path 106 leads into the Kirchbergtal and reaches the route description there, saving some height meters.
