Vorderer Brochkogel - quiet summit with magnificent views
The Vorderer Brochkogel is certainly one of the most beautiful viewpoint mountains in the Ötztal Alps. Located in the shadow of the Wildspitze, this massive mountain receives only few visitors.
From Rofen on the trail over the extensive slopes of Kuhberg in numerous hairpin bends to the Breslauer Hut. Now along the Seufertweg through the extensive Mitterkar to the signpost “Vorderer Brochkogel.” On trail traces along the lateral moraine, ascending a bit, then crossing into the debris-covered mountain slopes. Either southwest out to the ridge crest or to the cairns, or through the first hollow up to 3250 m and then only on the left out to the ridge crest. Always on the ridge edge or sometimes a little left of it up to the base of the summit ridge, which leads exposed without altitude gain to the summit cross. On the descent always along the ridge edge to the last cairn and then on the left through hollows back to the lateral moraine. Down this to the Seufertweg and back to the Breslauer Hut or down to Rofen.
Author’s recommendation
The summit generally receives little visit, but the ascent is especially beautiful in early autumn when peace settles on the mountains.

Safety information
Although the Vorderer Brochkogel, at 3565 m, is one of the highest peaks in the Ötztal Alps, this summit can be climbed completely snow- and ice-free. On some sections, hands must be used during the ascent. The summit ridge is airy at the end. Sure-footedness and freedom from vertigo are absolutely mandatory here.
This mountain tour should absolutely not be undertaken in fog or poor visibility, as despite numerous small cairns, orientation is not easy and one can very easily get into terrain prone to falling.

Roadbook
We start from the small parking lot in Rofen below the valley station of the material cable car to the Breslauer Hut at the Gh. Rofenhof. A few meters later, the trail (signposts) branches off to the right towards the Breslauer Hut. Through numerous hairpin bends, but consistently at a pleasant steepness, it goes over Kuhberg at the edge of the gorge of the Rofenbach stream up to point 2640 m. There the hiking trail No. 919 also joins, which leads from the top station of the Stablein chairlift. Now on trail No. 919 up the slopes “Am Zoagerle” to the beautifully located Breslauer Hut (2840 m). Directly at the Breslauer Hut, signposts point to the various mountain and hut destinations. We follow the “Seufertweg” westward, pass 2 glacier streams, and reach the 1850 moraines of the Mitterkarferner. Here a signpost points to the Vorderer Brochkogel. We follow trail traces that lead directly up the edge of the lateral moraine. Soon they lead left into a cirque, which extends from the west ridge. Following the small cairns, we gently ascend but do not head for the ridge with the visible cairns; instead, we turn right into the cirque ascending ahead. Over smooth polished rocks and much scree, we quickly gain altitude, and at around 3240 m, we climb left-hand between the rocks over a marked scree band out to the ridge crest. If you are carrying poles, it is advisable to stow them now in or on the backpack. Partly somewhat exposed and using hands, we climb briskly along the well-visible trail traces and occasionally red dots uphill. Partly the rocky terrain changes back to walking terrain. After this ascent, a small subpeak is reached at 3410 m. The actual summit cannot be identified even from here. The further ascent is easy and less steep (walking terrain). We head for the prominent rock pinnacles pointing to the sky, which seem to block the further way. But they can easily be bypassed on the left side. Only now do you see the summit with its small red-colored summit cross, but now there awaits an airy ridge crossing that requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. A fall here would certainly have fatal consequences. Either balancing over the ridge or also using hands, the final climb to the summit is soon reached, from where you enjoy a magnificent view of Vernagtferner, Fluchtkogel, Weißkugel, Weißseespitze, Hochvernagtspitze, and Wildspitze. The return follows the ascent up to 3240 m. From this height, we choose the further descent along the ridge crest to a pronounced saddle adorned with a cairn. Now on the left through a small valley with a little pond surrounded by moss, following the small cairns. Finally, via the trail traces to the lateral moraine and down this to the “Seufertweg.” On the left, there is a short ascent where we cross the Mitterkarferner streams twice over bridges. Finally, quite flat back to the Breslauer Hut. After a few minutes, the Breslauer Hut (2840 m) is reached, where you can refresh yourself with a view of a magnificent mountain panorama. Then it goes down on trail 919 to 2640 m. Here we branch off to the right and follow the trail again in numerous hairpin bends over the Kuhberg down to Rofen (2014 m).
Note
Since the high alpine route to the Vorderer Brochkogel involves a considerable altitude difference and corresponding length, this route can be split into 2 days by staying overnight at the Breslauer Hut.
