Val Germénega - La Via delle Valli
An adventurous and wild valley characterized by marked verticality, streams, and very charming lakes. This route leads from Val Genova to Rif. San Giuliano.
Here we describe the ascent from Val Genova, passing through Val Seniciaga and the first section of Val Germénega, up to Rifugio Laghi di San Giuliano.
The path starts after Chalet da Gino, about 900 m after the refuge on the left, going towards Bedole.
After crossing the river, take the trail that climbs steeply for 500 m along a mule track up to a pasture area where there are traces of the Great War. From here take Val Germénega, a side valley of Val Seniciaga, a pleasant and little frequented valley rich in water mirrors, dispersed in rapid succession. The first lake, at 1875 m, is the largest, while the fifth and highest, the Banco pond, is isolated at 2147 m.
If you want to see all the lakes of Germénega, and we recommend it, before taking the trail to San Giuliano a detour of about an hour towards Passo del Forcellin is necessary, then descend along the same route to the junction for Rifugio San Giuliano.

Rifugio San GiulianoSafety information
In general, the path is well marked, only near the bridges in the marsh after the fork to San Giuliano you need to pay more attention not to lose the signs and to avoid getting feet wet in the marshy ground.
Tips and suggestions
Trail status: the signs are good, but lacking near the bridges in the marsh after the fork to San Giuliano.Suggestions: we suggest a detour from the route to visit all the lakes of Germénega.
Water sources: yes, at Malga Germénega Bassa and at Rifugio San Giuliano (when open).
Refreshments and shelters: along the path there are Malga Germénega Bassa, closed, where you can get water, and Malga Germénega di Mezzo, abandoned and dilapidated. Rifugio Laghi di San Giuliano is an excellent point for refreshments and overnight stay (check opening out of season).
Reception: quite good (better at altitude than in the lower part of the valley).
Can you use a bike? NO, not along the path. It is however possible to approach by bike, maybe e-bike, along Val Genova.
Roadbook
From here continue on foot along the paved road for about 800 m, entering Val Genova. Before "Scala di Bo" (a steep climb), leave the main road turning left toward the river.
A small bridge allows crossing the river. Shortly after, keep right at the first fork and left at the second, following signs for Val Seniciaga and Val Germènga (trail marker 215).
The path climbs steeply through the forest with a steep ascent (500 m elevation gain) up to Malga Seniciaga Bassa, where it becomes gentler.
From here, still on a slightly uphill section, you soon reach Malga Germénega Bassa. In front of this, descend towards the river in the marshy plain below (trail marker 244).
The ground before beginning the climb towards Malga Germénega di Mezzo is often wet and muddy: be careful to avoid getting your feet wet.
Here you can decide whether to continue along Val Germénega and its lakes or head towards Rifugio San Giuliano.
To go to San Giuliano, from the malga continue uphill to the pass from where you see the refuge in the plain below, occupied by the beautiful San Giuliano lakes. From the pass follow the descending path (trail marker 221) that in about 30 minutes leads to the refuge, the end point.
The Rifugio San Giuliano is an excellent stop for a break or to stay overnight (it is advisable to check openings in the low season). For the return, you can follow the same itinerary back, returning to Val Genova, or continue towards Malga Campo, reachable in about two hours from the refuge.
At Malga Campo there is a parking lot: by organizing the day before, it is possible to leave a car there to facilitate the return to Caderzone Terme, in Val Rendena. The road descending from the malga is quite narrow, but does not require any permit.
By car, the return to Val Genova at the starting point takes about 30–40 minutes if you have left a car there the previous day.
Stamp: the stamp is located on a signpost pole in front of Rifugio San Giuliano.
