The largely unknown Matschertal offers great hiking opportunities, including some relatively easy three-thousanders. The proposed route to the Upikopf definitely belongs to these, as it is a prime example of a hiking three-thousander reaching its scenic summit without significant technical difficulties.
From the Glieshöfe at the end of the Matschertal, a driveable path first leads to the Upialm. A mostly comfortable trail continues walking direction there, climbs a terrain step, and passes the Upisee. The trail then turns left towards the Upikopf, which is reached over its southwest ridge, initially steep, later more comfortably.

Safety information
The trails and paths used in this route proposal are in good condition; there are no particular hazards. Nevertheless, the Upikopf should not be underestimated, as it involves covering numerous vertical meters.Tips and suggestions

Roadbook
From the parking lot, walk towards the Hotel Glieshof and pass the main building on the right. Follow the trail on the meadow to the left until you reach a driveable path. Walk right on this path and then steeply ascend in the direction of the Upialm. At the edge of the alpine pastures, the terrain becomes somewhat flatter, making the alpine buildings fairly easy to reach. Walk through them and follow the continuing trail. This initially runs parallel to a mountain stream but soon veers to the left to bypass a steep section. The trail is steep at times but eventually reaches a small high plateau with a beautiful view back over the Upialm. Then it continues uphill over some hills until reaching a small ridge at the edge of the Upisee. Here the still marked trail turns left and goes around a small hill on the right into a small side valley. Shortly after, the trail turns left again and vigorously climbs the steep southwest face of the Upikopf. After some fairly strenuous sections, the terrain eases off and the trail leads more comfortably over the ridge to the summit of the Upikopf.
The return to the valley is on the ascent route.
Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
Although the starting point at the Glieshöfe at the end of the secluded Matschertal is remote, it can be reached by public transport. The starting point for connections is the Mals train station, accessible by train from Meran or by various bus lines, including from Landeck (Tyrol) and Zernez (Graubünden):
- Weekdays: Bus 278 from Mals station to Matsch turning area; from there continue with the hiking taxi to the Außerglieshöfe
- Sundays and holidays: Hiking taxi from Mals station to the Außerglieshöfe
The hiking taxi connections are coordinated with train and bus times. Since there are only a few trips per day, please pay close attention to the schedules!
Directions
The Matschertal is a side valley of the Vinschgau and is reached via a junction from state road 40, the Reschenpass road, in the Mals district of Tartsch:
- From the Reschenpass: Drive down state road 40 from the Reschenpass towards Meran. After passing Mals, turn left at the exit of Tartsch towards Matsch.
- From Ofenpass and Münstertal: From Zernez, take national road 28 over the Ofenpass into the Münstertal to the border crossing there. Continue via Taufers im Münstertal and Laatsch to Mals and proceed as above.
- From Stilfserjoch: From Bormio, take state road 38 over the Stilfserjoch to Prad and continue to Spondinig. Keep left there and take state road 40 towards Reschenpass. At the entrance to Tartsch, turn right towards Matsch.
- From Meran: Drive up the Vinschgau on state road 38. In Spondinig, continue straight on state road 40 towards Reschenpass and turn right towards Matsch at the entrance to Tartsch.
About 7 km after turning from the state road, you reach the small village of Matsch. After the very narrow village passage, a paved but partly very narrow road continues to the Glieshöfe.
Parking
There are free parking spaces at the Outer Glieshöfe. Usually, the large parking lot at the end of the road immediately after crossing the Saldurbach, below the Hotel "Glieshof," is preferred. The route description begins there.Coordinates
