Selected alternatives for you

In this two-day version of the Untersberg crossing, the entire Unterberg is traversed from north to south. It is also possible to end the crossing already at Maria Gern. This way, you can experience the diverse massif in its full variety, especially if you choose the more demanding ascent via the secured Dopplersteig in the first part.

First ascend on one of the two hut approaches from Glanegg to the Zeppezauerhaus and the Geiereck located just above with the mountain station of the Untersberg cable car. From here follow the well-marked crossing path over the Salzburger Hochthron and the deeply incised Mittagsscharte to the Berchtesgadener Hochthron. A short descent leads to the first day's goal, the Stöhrhaus. For the descent into the valley, use the well-developed Stöhrweg to Maria Gern. From there, hiking paths partly interrupted by short stretches of road lead down to Berchtesgaden.

    Author’s recommendation

The start and end points are connected by bus lines. It is recommended to park your vehicle either in Berchtesgaden or St. Leonhard, as Schloss Glanegg is not served very frequently by public transport.

    Safety information

In dense fog, orientation is difficult despite good markings on the confusing plateau.

    Roadbook

    Day 1:
From the parking lot at the beginning of Rosittenstraße, 460 m, past some houses, until just before a bridge where the Reitsteig branches off to the right, 465 m. Ascend on the path equipped with many wooden steps in numerous switchbacks through the forest and over the steep section of the Steinernen Stiege, 1300 m ("Frauenwandl", wire ropes). Above the Steinernen Stiege, the Dopplersteig, 1525 m, joins from the left. Continue straight on the path through the dwarf pines in a common route for 15 minutes up to the Zeppezauerhaus, 1664 m.
Alternatively, you can reach here via the more difficult Dopplersteig (AV path 460). From the parking lot, 460 m, follow Rosittenstraße past some houses and the Reitsteig junction straight over the small bridge, 465 m. Ascend a steep step at the western edge of a quarry (wire rope, stone steps) and then gently uphill on a good forest path above the gorge of the Rosittenbach to a nearly level section near the ruined Lower Rositten Alm, 810 m. Continue ascending more steeply through the forest to the also ruined Upper Rositten Alm, 1287 m. Just above this, you reach a junction in the treeless cirque of the Upper Rositte, 1320 m. Follow the right path and ascend diagonally under the rock face. The Dopplersteig here follows a very steep, grassy ramp to the right of the Dopplerwand up to the plateau. The path is secured throughout and leads upwards over numerous, partly rock-cut steps. During the ascent, two short paths branch off. The first shortly after the start of the path to the right leads to the entrance portal of the ice-filled Kolowrat Cave, and the second somewhat higher to the left leads to the chamois holes. Both paths end at the cave entrances. The securing of the Dopplersteig ends at the Taxhamer Kreuz, 1560 m (nice resting point), shortly afterward the Dopplersteig joins the Reitsteig, which you follow to the left to the nearby Zeppezauerhaus, 1664 m.

From Zeppezauerhaus ascend to the mountain station of the Untersberg cable car, 1776 m, and descend on a wide path just below the terrain edge into a hollow, here keeping right to ascend the Salzburg Hochthron. A path leads down to the so-called Aschnoiplatz on the ski slope, where the crossing path branches left off the ski slope and leads over the undulating upper edge of the Untersberg plateau to the Großer Heubergkopf, 1852 m. Continue following the ridge and finally descend in steep switchbacks over craggy terrain to the deeply cut Mittagscharte, 1671 m. From the Mittagscharte, opposite the former border hut, follow the path leading south and ascend to the Ochsenkamm. Continue with constant ups and downs mostly on the NW side of the Untersberg ridge, past the Ochsenköpfe, 1824 m, the Rauheck, 1892 m, and the Gamsalmkopf, 1888 m, over the rolling Untersberg plateau. Shortly behind the Gamsalmkopf, a path branches to the Hirschangerkopf. The crossing path continues on the NW side of the ridge and up over the summit flank to the Berchtesgadener Hochthron, 1973 m. The summit itself is reached by a short detour from the main route. Descend over the summit ridge sloping westward through larch corridors to the Stöhrhaus, 1894 m.

    Day 2:
After an overnight stay at the Stöhrhaus, 1894 m, follow the Stöhrweg initially close to the rock faces, descending north of the plateau edge to the path junction at the Gatterl, 1602 m. Here continue straight on the main path and descend over wide switchbacks to the valley station of the material cableway, 1400 m. Follow the well-developed Stöhrweg behind it with gentle ups and downs along the eastern slopes of the Rauhen Köpfe (Almbachwand). Above the Kaltwasser spring, 1300 m, leave the main path continuing straight to the left and descend on the well-developed Gerer Weg through the forest to the uppermost farms in Hintergern. Before reaching the road, above the Untersberglehen, 920 m, follow the Gerner Höhenweg passing here to the right across the meadow, cross a stone ditch and through a forest patch to the Stadlerbauer, 950 m, at the end of the Obergerner Weg. The Höhenweg then briefly descends gently along the paved Obergerner Weg to a road junction, 910 m. Here follow the access road straight to the last farm, 925 m. Pass between the buildings onto a hiking trail across the meadows down to the Planitschbauer, 850 m. Follow the road briefly again until a hiking trail branches off to the left downhill steeply through the forest to the Klapfbauer, 760 m, on the Rabensteinerweg. Keep left and follow the hiking trail through a forest patch to the Fendtleitenbauer. Here descend on an access road into the valley below the impressive pilgrimage church of Maria Gern, 725 m.

At a bridge, the Klammsteig leads left down towards Berchtesgaden. After the gorge-like Klamm of the Gerner Bach, a road is reached, on which you ascend left to a hairpin bend. Here follow the hiking trail leading downhill again on the right into the valley stream, ascend to the Hilgergasse on the opposite side. Then continue down the scenic Locksteinstraße into the Nonntal district of Berchtesgaden. Along the street to the Berchtesgaden Castle with the collegiate church and behind it to the center of Berchtesgaden and further down to the train station of Berchtesgaden.
