Safety information
You need to keep an eye on the weather, because you’ll be several hours away from the nearest town.
And, of course, stay on the marked trails; otherwise, some sections are dangerously steep and rocky.
Roadbook
From here, a narrow hiking trail winds its way uphill.
Once on the ridge, I head east toward the Häfner Joch to continue on to the summit of the Güntlespitze (though you could skip this summit or save it for another time and head directly to the Üntschenspitze, heading west).
Once I reach the summit of the Güntlespitze, after a short rest, I head back the same way to the Häfner Joch and continue westward along the ridge to the Üntschenspitze. At the summit, we take a longer break.
Then we head back along the same path until just past the Häfner Joch. Soon we reach a fork in the trail, where this time I take the left path, heading downhill. After a short while, we reach the Häfneralpe. We follow the well-marked trail continuously downhill or toward the valley. The next alp along the way is the Pisialpe. Here, a forest trail begins again; we follow it out of the valley until we reach the outskirts of Schoppernau. At the fork near the Üntschenvorsäß, I head east toward the village (not south down toward the road). North of the country road, a quieter path runs parallel to it; shortly thereafter, we reach the Church of St. Philippus & Jakobus and walk from there to the “Gemeindeamt” bus stop near the Hotel Krone.
Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
The website https://www.vmobil.at/de is a great way to plan your arrival and departure.Directions
We took the train to Dornbirn Central Station, and from there took bus line 850 to Schoppernau Hinterhopfreben.
On the way back, it was easier and faster for us to take the route through the Großes Walsertal: Line 850 to Au Gemeindeamt, then transfer to Line 851 to Damüls Uga-Lift, transfer to Line 575 to Thüringen Busplatz, and from there take Line 565 to the Nenzing train station.
Parking
We didn't worry about that because we only take public transportation.Coordinates
